Where To Find Claritin Hives Facts in Answers
i think have the hives cuz of my random red spots and swollen lips. is claritin good? i have been like this for days now and its getting annoying by the minute. i thought the itch and the swollen-ish lips will be gone. i was assuming i had the hives.. maybe im allergic to tequila or old crabs though im pretty sure im nto allergic to crabs. so is it ok to take claritin?

pillow replied: "benidrill is your friend clariden might work but benidrill will work"

cay replied: "I have been allergic to aluminum since the 3rd grade, I'm a sophomore in college now. I get hives if i drink out of cans or eat anything that has been stored in aluminum. I used Benadryl-no dye & Allegra. The benadryl really helps."

Can I take claritin for a hives? I used neutrogena moisturizer wit spf15 and my face is itchy and red. I guess I'm allergic to it. Is it ok to take claritin for now since I don't have benadryl?

*jordan* replied: "i personally would take benadryl- thats what EMS give their patients suffering from an allergic reactions. some important things to ask are: are you having any swelling? or any trouble breathing? call 911 if you start becoming short of breath or start feeling like its getting harder to take a deep, clear breath of air. also watch for a change in voice- whispering, or hoarsness... this can be a sign of airway problems. just wanted to get that out there. make sure that youve gently scrubbed the skin with soap and water if its just itchiness and hives- use antihistamines and cortisone medications claritin works but benadryl is preferred."

For hives: Benedryl or Claritin? I recently got hives from a patch i used for muscle pains. There are two rectangles of i believe hives on my back and they itch A LOT. I got a shot from my doctor today and I wanted to know which one works better. Bendryl or Claritin?

J replied: "Benadryl. While the result of the 2 meds is similar they are very different. If you need aid in stopping an allergic reaction like the hives, Benadryl is the best bet."

kallmetigger replied: "benadryl. When I got a reaction to a medication, and taken to the emergency, that is one of the drugs they gave me."

mlgable replied: "They both work well. One can cause drowsiness and one doesn't so that is the only thing to think about when choosing one."

Rockford replied: "Benadryl definately works better. It will make you drowsy, but at least it works."

ceegt replied: "Benedryl is the drug that is most often prescribed for hives. Claritin is prescribed for allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, nasal conjestion. I use to get hives if I had anything that had any milk or milk product in it, and I was given Benedryl."

merillo5 replied: "Bendryl is the best for any allergic reaction. If you went to the ER that is what they would give you."

-.-' replied: "Benadryl is for a sudden allergic reaction, it does cause drowsiness. Claritin is not as strong, and can take up to 24 hours to work, as for the Benadryll it works in 15 minutes. I usually take a claritin everyday in the morning. If I do come in contact with something I'm allergic too the reactions aren't so bad. So Claritin is more or less a long term medication, and Benadryll is for a sudden reaction. -.-'"

Cathy F replied: "Benadryl."

Amy M replied: "They're both antihistamines, so they have similar end effects. Benadryl is known for making people sleepy. (That's what they add to tylenol to make Tylenol PM.) Claritin tends to not make people sleepy. Take what you have on hand, would be my advice. If I were at the store going to make a purchase, I'd buy the Claritin unless I wanted to sleep for 12 hours or so."

Hives: Allegra vs Claritin vs Zyrtec? I can no longer afford my Allegra pre ion copay (50 bucks!) Claritin does not work for my hives. Has anyone had any luck with Zyrtec? Thanks!

Cubby replied: "I am on Zyrtec now and it seems to be helping. My nose was like a basketball, it dribbled all the time. Now it is dry and my eyes don't itch either!"

mmhammack replied: "I've had good luck with the Zyrtec. You can buy a five pack at Walmart for about $6 to try it for yourself. I think it makes me a little drowsy though. I have better luck taking it at bedtime and I feel good all of the next day."

amandarez73 replied: "For hive - the best is to use plain benedryl -- while it causes drowsiness, it is the most effective in reducing hives."

sailor replied: "Some people have success with Zyrtec. The other thing about zyrtec is that Walmart, Sams Club and Costco and most drug stores all carry a generic version of it which is cheaper. You may need more than just an allergy medicine. Some allergists prescribe singulair, and I had success with serevent or advair in controlling my hives. I had hives for 10 years and they went away when I went gluten free. I was on a gluten free diet for a month and stopped taking meds and the hives have never recurred and I have stayed gluten free since then. The gluten free approach won't work for everyone but it does work for some so might be worth trying. Gluten is found in wheat, rye and barley and things made from them. Good luck."

Can I take Nyquil when taking Claritin and Atarax? I am taking Atarax and Claritin for a hive breakout but I have a cold and wanted to take some Nyquil. Just wondering if I would be safe taking them both at the same time?

KwajKid83 replied: "I am not sure that would be a good idea, because every Nyquil preparation I know of already contains an antihistamine-doxyalamine succinate. So, you would essentially be taking 3 antihistamines-so you would get 3 times the adverse effects, especially sedation. I think you should call a pharmacy, and ask the pharmacist. Also, if you read the labels of all 3 of them, they should say what medications you should avoid while taking them."

What would happen if I over take Claritin? I'm taking Claritin for my histeric hives which suggests to take only 1 tablet (Anti-histamin 10mg) in 24 hours but I've taken 6 tablets already in 24 hours and now I need to take one more since itchness comes up again and hives come to even my face. I'm on steroid and got pre ion of Benadryl but refused to take Benadryl since it makes me way too sleepy and take Claritin instead. But itchness comes back per 3~4 hours so had to take them pretty often then made me to take 6 tablets a day which is 6 times more than I should take. I'm worry about over-dose effect and side effect. My doc said a shot works as same as taking pills but should I go back to the doc to ask a shot no matter what?? Thank you all in advance ;-)

Kris R replied: "careful, it wil dry out your tissues. anywhere you have mucus membranes, including your nostrils, your esaphigus, your lungs, etc.... Talk to your doctor,. see what comes of that...."

rugby1dog replied: "there is a reason that the box says to only take 1 per 24 hours. the drug builds up in your system and you can't clean it out that quickly. you will make yourself sick if you keep overdosing on the stuff. i suggest you go to the doctor and listen to what he says follow the instructions on medicine because there have been tests done to know what is a safe dose."

michelle d replied: "You need to find out what you are allergic to and get to an allergist quick but in the mean time I would stop popping the Claritin and call poison control!"

Hives!!!!!!!!!!!!!? I have been getting hives since February this year. At 1st I was just getting them on my hands and feet and then one day I got them all over. Ever since then I have been getting them almost everyday and nothing has helped. I have been seeing an allergist since March and he ruled out auto immune route with a blood test and has put me on Xanac, Zyrtec, Claritin and Xyzal....None of them worked. I still got hives as if I wasn't on anything. I notice that I tend to get them later in the day. I can still get them early, but I notice more later. I have NEVER been allergic to anything in my life. I am not using anything out of the blue, as far as lotions and soaps go and detergent I use free and clear. I know that I may never know what is causing my hives....But if anyone has any ideas to how to maintain them preferably without meds...Like lotion for instance that would be great. By the way I have an appt to have an allergy test done in June. Thanks in advance!!!

SASSY BABE replied: "Wow you poor thing. My son gets hives from penicillin medication and he takes Zyrtec and it helps him.Yours must be a bad allergy to something. You can try camaline lotion for the time being until you get the test done. All the best"

Wally replied: "For a few days I've had horrible hives, too, all over my body, and they all itched like crazy. Every time I put on any sort of lotion, I just itched five minutes later. Luckily, the problem is solved. The other night, my parents called the family doctor and he prescribed something called... I think it's hydroxyzine, and it worked amazingly, thankfully, since it was either that or the emergency room. My hives went away within the hour, and it's also a mood enhancer AND put me to sleep, so even if I were still itching, it wouldn't have mattered. So ask your doctor about that. Then again, my hives were caused by a problem with my immune system, but that could be the problem with yours, too. Hives are caused by a number of things, you should look into that medication and other causes of your hives."

whiteharleytrike@yahoo.com replied: "you could be allergic to food or an additive. if this just started and you have had no systems before this, my guess is allergy to food additive. msg or somthing hydrolized would be my first guess. maltodextrine is corn. learn to read your labels. you must read them everytime you buy they change with no notice. i know this from experience."

sailor replied: "Try a test diet that is gluten free which means nothing made from wheat, rye or barley. I went gluten free after 10 years of hives and they went away in several weeks never to come back. I stayed on the gluten free diet. I know other people that have had good luck controlling hives with singulair, advair or doxepine. Good luck. Hives are very miserable and I hope you can get them under control."

How long does it take Claritin to work when taken daily? Our 2 1/2 year old has severe chronic hives(allergies too but he takes the meds for constant hives). He was taking Zyrtec daily but began having headaches. Since this was the most likely culprit we switched to Claritin. It has only been 2 days but he is breaking out worse than ever. Last night it was so bad his lips and nose were swollen. Will it take a few days for the full effect or is this just not working as well? We switched per already seeing his pedi.

Demi replied: "its probly not working well if it has been a couple of days, you may want to bring him to a doctor they could give you a cream or a medication that would help his hives faster"

replied: "I think it's just not working as well. When I was like 10 or 11 I was given claritin for my sinuses and within the day I was feeling better. I just don't think it's working and you might need something perscribed. So I would call a doctor."

beetlemilk replied: "Stop the claritin. Facial swelling indicates being allergic to that. Claritin should work quick, I took it this am. I have dyshidrotic eczema and the itchiness and peeling on the palms of my hands was unbearable. Considerable improvement maybe 50 percent. Do you have atarax? Have you tried benadryl? Have you tried calendula ointment? The calendula I also used this am."

I have allergic hives along my jawline, how can I get rid of them? I have tried Benadryl, Benadryl Severe Allergy, Tylenol MultiSymptom Allergy, and Claritin D. The Claritin is the only one to soothe the other symptoms, but the hives are persistent and seem to be getting worse. They started on my jawline, as usual, and moved to my chest and the insides of my elbows. It is getting ridiculous. The previous meds I took I did so for days at a time, at four hour intervals. :[ I will be seeing my family doctor on the 4th, but I was hoping to clear them up before then. I will try the lotion, though. :]

lonelygirl replied: "If they're TRULY hives, benadryl will get rid of them. Maybe they're something else? Or let the benadryl work, how long ago did you take it? Liquid benadryl works quickest for my allergic reactions"

mellowdee4 replied: "Calydral worked pretty well for me however mine were not facial, they were more around the bra line. Claritin D is has been a life saver for other reasons but I use the 12 hour not the 24 because it works better for me personally. If you are using or the other you might want to switch out but I know this is a time your want solid answers and don't want to experiment any more than you probably already have. See if your doc has any solid suggestions if all else fails. Good luck to you."
