Is there less insomnia with Wellbutrin SR than XL? I took Wellbutrin several years ago. Worked for depression, didn't bother my sleep. Haven't been on any antidepressants for over a year (different one stopped December 2005). Started on Wellburtirn XL last week and cannot sleep! Should I switch to the SR? Doctor offered it, but thought the convenience of once a day dosing would help. Any thoughts?

couchtalker replied: "My understanding is that Wellbutrin XL works better than SR because the XL gives you a more consistent blood level. This supposedly leads to a better antidepressant effect overall. However, make sure you take your dose in the morning or you increase the chance of sleep problems. Also, your dose has to be tailored to you. 150-300mg per day is the norm. If you are taking more than that, it may be too much. With any drug, give it some time for the side effects to go away as you adapt to the drug. If they don't, then it may be worth going back to the SR version. Best of luck."

Side effects for Wellbutrin SR - I'm not having any? I was on Celexa for almost 4 months. It worked well for the issues I was taking it for, but caused anorgasmia. So I asked to be switched to Wellbutrin SR, which has a low occurance of sexual side effects. I've been off the Celexa for over a week, and taking the WB for a week. I don't have any of the listed side effects of the WB, nor do I feel like it's doing anything for any of my issues. It lists insomnia as a major side effect, which is why I shouldn't take the 2nd dose after 6pm. But I feel more tired, not more awake. I don't feel more energetic, either. Is this just going to take a while to build up and kick in? The Celexa worked right away. I don't like feeling the way I'm feeling, when I'm taking medication and it's not helping. I did have insomnia before I started the Celexa - had trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, etc. That seems to have evened out, and the WB doesn't seem to have any effect, + or - on my sleeping.

TD replied: "Celexa didn't do anything for me. I can't take Wellbutrin because of my eating disorder. For some reason you can't take Wellbutrin if you have an eating disorder."

burntflowrz replied: "You have to give medications a good month to notice the effects."

Lily replied: "Give the wellbutrin some time to get into your system, otherwise talk to your doctor at your next appointment."

KB replied: "First of all, insomnia does not mean being more awake, it means having trouble sleeping. You can be very tired and still have difficulty sleeping. Also, you don't HAVE to have the side effects listed on a medication. Those are all potential effects and are not the same with every person. if you have questions on your medication, please talk to your doctor. Your doctor can let you know if the medication needs time to build up in your system or if you should feel the effects right away. NEVER self dose on medication, or stop taking medication without the consultation of your doctor."

Rosie S replied: "I took Wellbutrin for a couple of weeks. It made me itch. No rash. Just an itch. It was a nervous itch around by neck and upper chest area. Skin got red. Also had pain in my right upper abdomen. Thought it was gallbladder. Had ultrasound. Gallbladder okay. Stopped taking the Wellbutrin and symptoms left. Started then on Prozac."

deshane2530 replied: "Wellbutrin did not work for me at all. I might have well have saved my money. It was about as good as aspirin for that. It takes awhile to build up in your system. If after 2 months, you see no difference, try something else. Maybe Lexapro or Lamictal. To me, those are better."

Boopie replied: "Give it about two or more weeks. If it doesn't work for you still then try another drug. Wellbutrin is one of the only drugs that has low sexual side effects. Try one of the newer atypical drugs. Lexapro is a newer version of Celexa so that might be good. But if Celexa worked well for you, don't feel ablidged to try another drug just because it is newer. If it isn't broke then don't try to fix it."

kitty.hicks replied: "You didnt mention how long you have been taking wellbutrin.... but if its been longer than a few weeks then you should have seen results. You may want to give other SSRI 's a try. here is a current list of whats available .... maybe discuss these with yur Dr. citalopram (Celexa, Cipramil, Emocal, Sepram) escitalopram oxalate (Lexapro, Cipralex, Esertia) fluoxetine (Prozac, Fontex, Seromex, Seronil, Sarafem, Fluctin (EUR)) fluvoxamine maleate (Luvox, Faverin) paroxetine (Paxil, Seroxat, Aropax, Deroxat) sertraline (Zoloft, Lustral, Serlain)"

Wellbutrin SR dosage? I'm taking Wellbutrin SR (sustained release) 100 mg two times per day (200 mg total). My doctor wants to up my dosage to 300, and I had some questions I totally blanked on today. I'm seeing him again tomorrow, so will ask him, as I know none of you can provide me with an opinion as valid as his. I'd still like to know what to expect though. I have A LOT of trouble swallowing pills. I spend about 20 minutes trying to swallow an advil tablet. You're not supposed to take each 100 mg pill at least 8 hours apart, I do 9 to be safe. So if I took 3 100mg pills, I'd have to take one really late at night, which would give me insomnia. I'm assuming I could take the 150 mg tablets twice a day, but with the size I'd have a lot of trouble. So, my main question is could I take 2 100mg tablets in the morning, and 1 100mg tablet at least 8 hours later? Because the 2 100mg tablets would dissolve and affect me at the same time, would that lead to an overdose? 200mg can be taken at once, but it's normally in one pill. Would taking 2 100mg be dangerous? Please explain if you can, and let me know how you know this (if it's just a guess, if you have a degree, etc.) Thanks in advance! Phoebe- Do you take generic Bupropion SR, or Wellbutrin SR? I've read online there's a big difference in side effects, so I'd assume this would also differ. (Main difference is supposed to be cost and what insurance will cover, but people who have been on both reported different effects) Thanks!

fizzyphoebe replied: "I take 300 mg Bupropion SR. I take both 150's in the morning at the same time. My doctor advised it, and another doctor told me it was fine, as well as the pharmicist.. Otherwise I can't sleep. So I take 300mg of the SR (not the XL) every morning at the same time, and I have never had a problem. If the 100 mg tablets are the instant release kind, then it might be a problem, i have no idea, but if you are taking sr tablets you would be fine."

trixie.delicious replied: "I would ask to switch to the 150 XL. You could take two of them once a day, and if that was too much you could easily go back down. (Instead of taking one 300 XL.) And if you get brand Wellbutrin, the tablets are very small. I can't stress enough how dangerous the generic versions can be -- stay away from budeprion at all costs! If your insurance won't pay for brand, at least try to find a pharmacy that carries bupropion. Even that isn't as effective as brand, but the budeprion is completely worthless and nearly landed me in the hospital. There's a lot of information about these issues online. I know how confusing it can be, so good luck!"

23 days of wellbutrin sr and ready to jump out of skin!!? I am on my 23rd day of wellbutrin sr (150mg.x2). I guess I am thinking that by now I should be feeling just a little better, right?? I think I actually feel worse. I am taking it for anxiety and mild depression, which was causing insomnia. I don't want to have to take ativan and ambien cr to sleep, but now, I can't even sleep very well WITH the ambien cr. My joints are very sore and I just feel awfully anxious. Do I need to wait it out or switch meds? I took Lexapro for 4 weeks in the month of December and it really worked on anxiety, but didn't like how it made me feel in the "lovey-dovey" department. I am VERY hungry on wellbutrin too, which doesn't seem to be the norm. Surely I should feel some benefit after 23 days!! Thanks everyone for your input. As I write this I am waiting on a call from my Dr. I forgot to mention that I aslo experience the ringing in my ears and an ungodly strange "numb" sort of feeling with my teeth. Sounds pretty strange I know. I must be the SIDE EFFECT QUEEN!! Dr. just called and said to stop the wellbutrin and start back up Lexapro @10mg. I sure hope this works!

Hippie C replied: "I have been taking wellbutrin for a few years now. You are right, you should be feeling at least somewhat better. Not all medicines work for all people. I do not think this is the right one for you. You need to go back to the doctor and tell him what is going on. They can give you something else that won't make you feel like this. What is happening is normal though. Most people have to try a couple of medicines before they find the right one. So, get back with your doctor asap so you can get on the road to feeling better. By the way, for some reason wellbutrin does make you eat and gain weight. It did it to me too."

dylansmom25 replied: "I personally like prozac for depression.. as for anxiety I've never heard of wellbutrin being used for anxiety.. I was under the impression it was just a depression drug. if you're having those kinds of side effects , you need to switch to something else...and there are other things out there to take besides ativan.. (have you tried klonipin?) or xanax? both work pretty well."

JustMe replied: "I would recommend Cymbalta. I was on Wellbutrin and was recently changed. It works great. You should have gotten positive results by now. Contact your doctor."

Thomasina replied: "You should be feeling it by now. For Wellbutrin did not work for my anxiety either. I now take Zoloft for both mild depression and anxiety, I would never switch I feel like the old me again. I have been on it now for over 5 years. Hope this helps. As far as the lovey dovey department it affected it in the beginning but it got better soon after. You can also try an herbal remedy for your insomnia called Melatonin(I am not sure about the spelling) I know a few people who take it regularly and they say it helps them fall asleep and stay asleep. I hope this helps. Good Luck!!"

1024 replied: "I have never heard of taking Wellbutrin for anxiety. A very common side effect of ther drug is anxiety, so that seems quite counter-productive. I had to really beg my doctor to let me try it for depession. By the second day on it, I was practically inable to drive my car without images of fatal car accidents every ten seconds, I was so anxious. I highly recommend you try something else other than Wellbutrin. I hate to say it, but I was anxious for a LONG time while driving after I was off of Wellbutrin - I can only assume that it triggered brand-new fears in me that stayed with me for months."

lil sammy replied: "You might try the XL form before you give up on it. Also your dose might be too high. It worked great for me 150 once a day. I tried to go up to 300 a day at the SR form for winter blues and it turned me into the bride of chucky. I was anxious, shaking, and angry. I threw a beer can not put on a coaster at my husband's friend, while screaming at him if you can imagine that. Classy! So, I went back to the 150 of XL and all is normal again. Wellbutrin is a pretty good medicine. It's the only thing I've not had side effects from. But I would advise to do something now. If you're on day 23 you must need a refill soon and it's been long enough, so call your doctor. You've been patient--I kicked Effexor to the curb after only five days for the same reason. Good luck :)"

Laylah S replied: "Jules, I think that is enough time, you sound totally miserable on this drug. Wellbutrin is NOT a good drug for someone with anxiety & insomnia, my guess is your doctor switched you from Lexapro to the Wellbutrin because it often does not cause sexual side effects. Please contact your doctor, there are other drugs to try that you don't have to feel this miserable on."

How long does Wellbutrin SR stay in your body? I took Wellbutrin SR to quit smoking over 3 years ago. I had all the side effects you read about (insomnia, constipation, weight loss). I've just begun taking it again today. I'm curious as to whether I'll experience the same side effects, or if your body "remembers" and therefore you don't experience them as you did the first time. Interestingly enough, after being in my system for less than six hours I already noticed the effect on the "taste" of cigarettes. It's interesting that it happened so quickly. As I remember it took about a week to notice the side effects. Also, I did take it about it six months ago, but only for about 2 weeks.

Kate from Drugs.com replied: "If you had side effects before it is highly likely that you'll have those side effects again. If your body couldn't tolerate it before, it might not tolerate it this time either. In terms of answering your first question about how long it'll be in the system: It takes 5.5 half-lives to be totally eliminated. The mean elimination half-life of bupropion after chronic dosing is 21 (9) hours (i.e. a maximum of approximately 30 hours). Therefore it'll take about 165 hours to be eliminated."

On Wellbutrin SR, 150 mg, and i've been having problems with it...? I want to go off it completely. I've been experiencing way too much agitation, insomnia, and anxiety. Should I go down to half for a few days and than off completely? Will I experience any serious withdrawl effects? (I can't ask my doctor right now because he is out of town for a few weeks)

Kaiialyne S replied: "Don't take yourself off it, because yes, with Welbutrin there can be withdrawal. Instead go to another psychiatrist and have a consult and explore your options. He or she can help you decide what to do so that you don't endanger yourself in any way. This will probably involve lowering the dose until your regular doctor returns."

Tabatha replied: "It's never a good idea to stop this type of medicine totally - I really wouldn't recommend that. If you can't speak to your own doctor, isn't there another doctor at the practice who can advise you? Failing that, check out the website of the company who produce Wellbutrin and see if they give any guidance. If you really feel you need to cut the dose, and can't wait until your regular doctor returns, then only do it very gradually, and speak to your doctor as soon as possible. Ideally, wait until he's back before you alter the dosage. All anti depressants can cause withdrawal symptoms - some drugs more than others. And of course some people suffer more withdrawal than others. You should be very careful before making any dramatic changes to the dose of your medicine, because if you do suffer withdrawal, you might feel worse. Good luck with it, and be careful."

tammy lariviere replied: "No you should not go off this medication with out consulting you DR. This is an anti-depressant that should be slowly decreased before stopping...Hope everything goes well for you, and know there are many other meds out there that do the same job but without as many side effects."

replied: "Although the others who have answered are correct in spite of that I was on it for 2 years and took it twice daily and stopped cold turkey . But in my case the cause of my depression had gone so that could well make a difference. I had the same difficulties especially random agitation but also insomnia and anxiety . I now take paxil and xanax for anxiety which I still have . Most doctors have someone who fills in for them while they are away , call and ask his answering service who is filling in for him . If you don't get a satisfactory answer call a local hospital he may practice at and they can tell you who is filling in for him and give you a phone number to speak with his fill in so you can pose this question to him or her whatever the case may be . I would recommend doing that . Good luck I know how you feel and experienced this myself ."

Samantha replied: "Don't go off your medication without your doctor's help... withdrawal can be hell if you don't taper off right and you probably need to start another medication first so that you don't end up immediately sinking back into depression when you stop. The only reason you should stop without a doctor is if your side effects are extremely severe."
