Has anyone ever used garlic pills to get rid of a herpes outbreak? A friend told me about this - she said it works. She also said to put rubbing alcohol on any of the ''spots''... Has anyone else tried these methods? I'm already on valtrex and it's not working as quickly as I thought it would.

Rambo replied: "If you put any foreign substance on these lesions you will never do it again, if you aggravate them they will become extremely painful . It is best not to put anything on it. Take your meds and wait. If you feel the outbreak coming , as many people say they can feel a tingly feeling, take double doses at first. * the reason herpes can't be cured is basically , it hides in the synapse of your nerves (it is a virus) and the medication can't reach it. The only time the medication can "work' on the virus is when it becomes active in your blood stream, so upon feeling it coming on, hit it hard with your drug. Many people claim to go years without an outbreak once they learn how to detect an outbreak in advance."

Roxie replied: "if you put alcohol on the spots or blisters during an outbreak you will be in a incredible amount of pain and it'l sting alot so no that would be a bad idea your just going to have to keep with the valtrex, take some ibuprofen have a bath and add some salt, a small amount it should help make it less irritating and clear up and dry faster x"

LINDSEY S replied: "Seriously NOT a good idea unless you want to be in more pain then your all ready in. Just keep the out breaks clean and dry, you can try soaking in warm baths to help with the pain and keep taking your meds. Valtrex need a couple of days to kick in, but if you think it's not working then go back to the doctor and tell them. They may want to try some thing else as Valtrex works different for every one."

How Can I get rid of fever blisters? I have always gotten fever blisters since I was a kid. My doctor has prescribed me a topical ointment to put on them called zovirax. It helps, but not as quickly as I would like. Well this morning, I started out with one and now i have 6. They are so painful and so humiliating. Is there something that I am doing to make them spread? I was told to ask my dr for Valtrex....... and for any of you who want to relate this to the STD herpes and be hateful, please save it for someone else. Thank you!

Sue B replied: "Put an ice cube on it the minute you feel it begin, a tingle, go for an ice cube! Leave it on till the ice melts. Some creams actually cause more to come out. Ask your Dr. to prescribe something else."

TweetyBird replied: "Valtrex has unlabeled uses and the treatment of HSV-1 (what you have) is one of those uses. Speak to your prescribing physician about the advisability of switching you to Valtrex."

mrodrx replied: "Valtrex would be effective. The virus that causes fever blisters is very similar to the virus that causes STD herpes. There is a pre ion ointment called Denavir that is also effective. Abreva is the best over the counter treatment for fever blisters. You should try Abreva for a day or two to see if that works. If it doesn't, call your doctor."

Pops replied: "As soon as I feel the blister starting and begging to turn red, and get itchy, start soaking it with Blistex. I keep a glob on it all time. Usually, it will never break out. Camphor is good and is used in the Blistex. Eat lots of Pepperoncini Peppers. I used to have a little white sore in my mouth all time until I starting craving the peppers. After a couple of gallon jugs, over a period of time, I no long have them. By the way, fever blisters (cold sores) area VERY contagious. Don't kiss anyone when they are broke out. They DO operate a lot like the STDs and are also a cousin. Good luck. Pops"

What is the best and fastest way to heal a cold sore? I got a cold sore last week, and I took this (pre ion) medication for it called "Valtrex". I've also been using a topical cream (also pre ion) called Zofirax. It's beginning to dry up, but I feel like the healing process is almost more obvious than before. Is there any way for it to peel off or dissolve quickly? Any tricks you know for speeding up the process or for covering it up? Thanks!

Chris Wins replied: "rub some dirt on it and walk it off"

tenaciousd replied: "Tea tree oil will help it dry up. you can get lip balm with tea tree oil in it. Also carmex works pretty good."

carebearzrule222 replied: "ABREVA!"

SexyPharmacist replied: "are you sure it isn't zovirax? For my cold sores, I use camphophenique. It's at wal-mart and is available OTC."

tribyen replied: "abreva works pretty well for me. It takes a few days, but it makes it less noticeable pretty quickly. however, it is pretty expensive. also, peeling it off won't help, I have a bad habit of trying to do so, and it just makes it worse, so resist the temptation to do so. good luck!"

Ryan M replied: "ive had my cold sore for so long, i would try going down to ur chemist and buying a cold sore cream"

David replied: "abreva"

SISTERGOMEZ replied: "Use Sister Gomez;s herpacilin cream. It does wonders and made from herbs and spices."

Marcus C replied: "Unless you really like hanging around clinics, there is generally no need to visit a doctor to get cold sores treated. Non-pre ion ointments are available to ease the pain, and an oral analgesic may also help. That said, however, there is a remote chance of complications. For instance, if the infection spreads to the eyes, the result can be blindness. There is also increased risk of more serious infections for people with defective immune systems or eczema, and also for infants. So if you are in a group at increased risk, or if you are having severe symptoms, or if there is an itching in your eye while you have cold sores, or if you have a crush on your medical care provider, its best to see your doctor. Whatever you do, avoid touching your eye after touching a cold sore. Wash your hands frequently to avoid spreading the disease. Severe infections can be brought under control they may be treated with a pre ion cream, Zovirax. But, regardless of its severity, no cold sore can actually be cured. If treated early, however, the period of viral activity can be shortened with drugs like Penciclovir, Aciclovire, Valicyclovir, and Ganciclovir. A derivative of castor oil, undecylenic acid, is also thought to be effective against viral skin infections."

? replied: "The absolute best treatment for cold sores is a pre ion medication in pill form called Valtrex. It was intended for genital herpes, but cold sores are caused by the same family of viruses, and Valtrex stops colds sores in their tracks. None of the other treatments come close to the effectiveness of Valtrex, not the ointment you mention and not Abreva or anything else. Ask your doctor about it to see if you would be a good candidate for the meds. My doctor prescribed it for me for cold sores about five years ago and after taking it only a couple of times I hardly ever get a cold sore any more, and I was having several attacks a year. On the rare occasions that I do get one, it is gone almost immediately when I take the medication - in about a day. Ask your doctor about it. In the meantime, here are a couple of informative links."

I have just come off Prednisone and Valtrex for Bells Palsy.? The treatment is what they put all Bells Palsy patients on at my doctors office no matter what. Now that my immune system is so far down I need to boost it back up. Preferably as quickly as possible as well. Not trying to sound crazy but the swine flu has just been confirmed in the city right next to me and I just want to be healthy enough to give a fighting chance if I happen to get it. What vitamins, supplements, and steps can I take to boost my immune system again! Thanks =)

sokokl replied: "A daily multi-vitamin as well as eating lots of fruits and vegetables can help with the immune system. Also, washing your hands frequently can help as well as drinking a lot of water. I would recommend checking with your regular doctor as well if you haven't already to see what they say."

Zerah replied: "Hi. I was looking for basically the same answer for the same reason. This swine flu thing is scary. *I* think it is a genetically-engineered bio-virus that got loose. I, also, have just come off a 30-day course of prednisone & was searching for the same answers. Do you know how long it takes for your body/adrenals to recover? A general immune boosting plan would be to start with 3 grams of Vit C - 3 times a day + Vit A +1,000 to 2,000 IU of Vit D3 (cholecalciferol) (An increased daily dose of 5-10,000 IUs of D3 will boost your bodys production of antimicrobial peptides shown to kill the influenza virus.) & Zinc. All of these will strengthen your immune system against the flu. Generally you can megadose with C up to bowel tolerance. I started on 2 grams on Monday (4/27) and I am taking 8 grams now (Thur 4/29). Ascorbic acid is fine and inexpensive, but if you increase too quickly you may get diarrhea (harmless but bothersome); if you can afford it, Ester C is better tolerated & better assimilated by the body. Vit A is fat-soluble & can be toxic in high doses. If you are prone to infections, take 10,000 IU of vitamin A daily. (During an infection, brief high doses of vitamin A-50,000 to 100,000 IU for a couple of days-can strengthen the immune system, but dont take that amount over an extended time period.) You could use another form of A, Beta-carotene that is a precursor to vitamin A, and is not toxic even in large doses, (except if youre a heavy smoker & then you should avoid taking more than 25,000 IU of beta-carotene) Some other immune-enhancing substances that I may add are: Elderberry Anise Acai berry Forsythia Honeysuckle Ginseng Probiotics is healthy bacteria that helps boost the immune system Silver Oregano Olive leaf Everyday I drink at least 1 8-oz glass of water or juice to which I have added 1 Emergen-C packet & 1 Airborne tablet. I think those two products are outstanding & have prevented me from illness numerous times. Presently I am also taking 6 gms of C; 5000 IU of D3; 20,000 IU of Vit A; 50,000 IU of Beta Carotene; 2-3 gms of Lysine; Omega 3 fish oil/flax caps TID; 50-100 mg of Zinc (women should not take more than 100 mg of zinc per day); ginseng caps QID plus all my other vitamins I take regularly. I will probably raise the dosages on most of the supplements. THEN I am absolutely avoiding as much contact with other humans as possible (which isnt difficult because I like my pets & other animals better than most humans, anyway). I was on the prednisone for severe degenerative joint disease. It was a 1st time trial & I really did feel much less pain, but I dont want to trade my immune system for reduction in pain. There has to be another way. I will continue my research & if you want to contact me I am on mySpace at. I was thinking about doing a blog on this swine flu/immunity thing if I can get around to it. Peace & Blessings, Zerah"

How quickly do you get the results from a monospot test? My girlfriend is getting one today because they think she has mono. I haven't been with someone different since Feb 3. I met my girlfriend about a week after that. I have not gotten mono symptoms and besides a sore throat and cold have been fine up to this point. What is the likelihood that I got it and passed it to her? She hadn't been with anyone for a while before meeting me, but had a friend who had it last year and was hospitalized, then had a relapse in symptoms about a month ago. They didn't share anything though other than a kitchen table. What's the easiest way for me to get tested? Can I go directly to a bloodwork lab or do I need a referral? I have yet to switch physicians since my health insurance changed. Is is common to prescribe Valtrex yet as Wikipedia suggested?

snazzy replied: "hmm... I had mono about a year and a half ago. They thought I had it mildly for months, until it hit its peak and I was awful for 2 1/2 weeks. I have no idea where I got it from, but chances you gave it to her are probably unlikely. You can go to your physio and ask them to take your blood to get tested. That's what I did. When I first went to the doc, they tought it was strep and I asked if it could be mono... he said no no, but if things don't change come back ina week to get blood taken. Two days later I went up there and asked for it to be taken and tested... I was right. It takes usually a day to get results back about the test."

Debra B replied: "You get the results back instantly with a monospot test. Lab tests require a doctors order. It's probably not that important to be diagnosed even if you have mono. It's very easy to catch mono. Here's the most important thing: mono can cause your spleen to be enlarged, so it's important to avoid activities that cause bouncing (like running) or sports in which you could fall onto your abdomen. Your spleen could rupture and this is quite serious. It is not common to prescribe valtrex for mono. Normally, you would just take ibuprofen or tylenol for symptoms, avoid activities as described above, and get plenty of rest."

Please share your herpes treatments/therapies!? I read on here last week that a guy was using rubbing alcohol to make his genital herpes outbreaks heal quickly.... I was feeling the PREsymptoms (leg cramping, tingling & itching at the usual outbreak spot) and I have a little bottle of hand sanitizer in my purse. I thought '"well, it is mostly rubbing alcohol'" and I put it on the area that usually has an outbreak....about 4 times/day My pre-symptoms stopped within a few hours and I did NOT have an outbreak.... I've never had anything work so well.... I expected it to break out & maybe heal quicker....but to not have an outbreak!!! AMAZING! Anybody else got a strange or unusual treatment or therapy? I've had genital herpes for over 20 years and Valtrex does not work for me (long long story) so any other advice y'all got would be helpful!!!

LINDSEY S replied: "i don't think i would use something like that on my genitals but what ever works for u. i had my outbreaks suppressed by a natural path and have been outbreak free since october 2007. i just keep my immune system strong and take lots of vitamines (omega 3-6-9, vitamine c, vitamine b, ginsing, iron). i still get oral outbreaks and symptoms of gential outbreaks but no genital outbreaks since october. i have also used Burasol and found that to take away some pain (from drug stores). i have heard actual rubbing alcohol works. extra strength advil helps but not for long."

Cold Sores? My sister has a monster cold sore and we were wondering what sorts of foods to avoid to maybe help it go away more quickly. Anyone have any ideas? She's taken a pre ion from her doctor (valtrex one day Rx) and it's still very large. Have any other suggestions?

The Answer IX replied: "buy her carmex"

KeKe replied: "I know exactly what she can use that will make it disappear within 12-24 hours, but she'll have to order it because most people don't have this. It's called Deception and it immediately makes the redness and itching go away, then the blisters will go away without scabbing. Even if it's too late for this one, she needs to have this stuff around for the next time. I absolutely could not live without it since I get one every month, and this stuff kills it immediately, even when my Valtrex and Abreva won't. It's expensive, but well worth it. It's made by Dremu. I'll post the site below."

candface1 replied: "ask a doctor a doctor would know"

sandy i replied: "tee tree oil is really good for cold sores. I have used this for years and it works for alot of skin and scalp problems. just put a drop on a cotton swab and put it on the cold sore. do this at least 2-3 times a day. you can also get a lip medicine that has lysine in it. but tee tree is perfectly safe. it is use in toothpaste and mouthwash also. it has antibacterial and fungicide properties. it comes from australia."

night worker replied: "u mainly get cold sores by eating too much suger, cut the suger off for a few days,it should go away.then after that dont eat so much sugar."

twinkle replied: "Chocolate and fryed things are DONT"S when you have cold sores; i have them about 3-5 times a year...; they go faster if you use some sort of cream which applys directly on the blisters; it's called ACYCLORVIL but i'm not sure if you have it there."

J'sGirl replied: "lysine tablets.found in the supermarket or health food shops.i dont know if they are any good once you actually have the coldsore.i presume they would be.but as soon as theres an itch take one of these and ull never see a cold sore.ive never had a cold sore in my life and i dont know if its because of these pills or not but it really works for everyone i know"

Lisa replied: "Foods to avoid: citrus fruits and juices (orange, lemon, lime), pineapple, tomatoes, salt, french fries, fried foods, spicy foods (esp. Mexican), peppers. Basically, stick with a bland, salt-free diet for a while. Abreva helps - it's an OTC ointment. And no soda or cappucino or juice - drink lots of water."

egaccas replied: "Unfortunately, it is a form of herpes and it can spread to another if you share utensils, drinks, chap stick, lipstick ... anything that comes in contact with your mouth; especially during the painful blister stage of the cold sore, when it's cracked open and oozy. Some of these can be spread from one to another, and others they can be inherited.. Or so I believe. But in the long run, everyone has this type of virus, but when it comes to exposure, a lot don't even have symptoms of a ColdSore. They can also become triggered by stress.. Pimples and Coldsores you can easily tell the difference, as the sores are usually accompied by a slight tingling sensation where it plans on breaking out. If you catch them quick enough, I suggest using ABREVA to stop them from becomming extremely painful. If not, then either a per ion or at-home remedy can help."

snowflakewinnie replied: "Lysine supplement."

Sandie L replied: "abreva works great for me, i seem to get them about every 4 mos. and as soon as i feel that little tingly feeling, i put abreva on it like 4 times in a day and they never form into the blister, the stuff works well for me...good luck, i know what a complex i get when i have one....but alot of people get them, so tell her to relax use the abreva, take the dr meds and dont stress that is only gonna make it worse, and dont pick at it, LEAVE IT ALONE except for the abreva!!!"

In all honesty..is this herpes prevention plan really that horrible? I have herpes..I don't have many outbreaks and when I do have an outbreak it is always very little and heals quickly. My new boyfriend doesn't know I have it. I don't want to tell him. I know it may sound horrible not to but I wouldn't have sex with him while I have an outbreak and always use a condom and start on valtrex. Herpes isn't as bad as it sounds. I don't want to risk losing him by telling him. Would it be the worst thing ever if I would just always use a condom, take valtrex and not have sex when I have an outbreak? If I do all this the chances of him getting herpes is only like 2%..in all honesty would you really not break up with your girlfriend if you found out that she had herpes? WTF? herpes is nothing like HIV! *idiot* herpes is only getting a little blister or a few not a death sentence! the number of outbreaks tends to decrease over a period of years.

*Cara* replied: "What would you do if you found out he had HIV and you had sex with him and he never told you? It's the same thing. Be honest and up front about it now so you don't have problems later."

NMS replied: "I think he has a right to know, you would want to know if you were in his position. If you think your relationship is going somewhere you are eventually going to have to tell him and the sooner the better he might resent you for it if he finds out you didn't tell him sooner."

Guru replied: "2% is NOT zero risk Tell him."

Need help from someone who has dealt. Herpes and dating question? I was referred here from a friend and I am hoping to get some insight. I was diagnosed with HSV-2 (genital) two years ago via a bloodtest. I have never had any outbreak or symptoms at all and I take Valtrex every day. I started seeing a great guy a month ago and after a couple weeks of dating we carelessly had sex (drinking, I know dumb) and so I told him of my condition the next day when I saw him. He said he did not know about the disease but wanted to stay with me anyway because things were so amazing between us (I can honestly say this is the first man in about three years I have mentally, emotionally and physically connected with, we have SO many things in common and had mutual attraction). Well the next day he went to his doctor, then dumped me. He said he had to be selfish and apologized because his doctor told him that although he might not get it immediately, the risk increases over time. It has been about a week since. I am dying. I know we only dated for a couple weeks and I sound stupid, but this guy was IT for me! I know he felt the same about me too because he was so great with the courting and conversation and things just progressed quickly. I have started to feel better but deep inside I pray he calls me again or says he wants to try. Am I just fooling myself? I put this is singles and dating and STDs because I would like some closure. Please, don't make fun of me. This was the first time a man rejected me because of the disease (not like I am a ho, I had only been with two other guys in the past three years and I AM a monogamous partner!) THANK U!

Darcy replied: "I'm sorry to hear of your heartache. It's a tough situation. You have to know that while he may be into, if he can't accept you as you are (HSV and all) than you have to move on and find someone that you will click with emotionally/physically/mentally and who will accept you just as you are! There is no crystal ball...and truth be told, he may call you. But don't sit at home waiting for the phone to ring. You do your thing...and let the pieces fall where they may. Good Luck to you"

Danielle aka lilboo replied: "hey i dont no if i can answer your question really but i have herpes have had it for about 8/9mths..im 19 and have met a guy that i reli like about 3weeks ago but im new to this and to scared to tell him about it, i havent slept with him yet i just feel like HERPES is taking everything away from me and messing up my life ..x.. if u wanna chat email me ..x.. dani"

Momo011 replied: "Hey ive had herpes for about 3 1/2 yrs now and i can relate to u. One of my close guy friends who i thought was a potential partner i had told him about my "GH" and it was a really hard thing to do because he always said that hes clean and did not want any diseases. Anyways Hes ignoring me now and i did cry but now im keeping myself busy by working, spending time with family. Keeping busy or listening to certain types of music is a good way that i found to deal. P.S My soon to be ex-husband knew he had it, never told me and did for his own selfish reasons. So this stigma about people being "Dirty" is so wrong. I hope everything works out:)"

Rissa D replied: "well first off let me start out by saying im sorry to hear about your diagnoses. I know genital herpes is both physically and emotionally painful because i have it myself. I am 18 female, diagnosed with HSV-1 genital herpes 2 years ago. My ex performed oral sex on me (he had a cold sore) and the next day i woke up with painful open sores all over my labia. By the peak of my outbreak i had over 50 sores, it was extreamly itchy, painful, i couldent sleep at night because of the discomfort, all of this on top of being depressed that i was just diagnosed with an incurable disease! After my first outbreak i started taking valtrex 500mg twice daily. After 6 months i got off of the daily supressive therapy, and have not had an outbreak since. But then again i have HSV-1 genital herpes it causes fewer outbreaks than HSV-2 gential herpes (asked my doctor). THE DATING PART: I know this is extreamly difficult. You were just diagnosed with an incurable disease and now on top of having that stress you have to let potential sex partners know you have it. The first guy i had sex with after being diagnosed at first was okay with me having it, he even wanted to have unprotected sex. Two weeks later he called me up and told me he just coulden't do it. I was upset at first but i knew rejection was a possibility and i knew there was a guy out there that could love me enough to look past a few bumps. Exactly one month ago oon the 26th <3 i met a great guy! Just after 2 weeks of knowing eachother i brought up the dreaded std conversation. I asked him (jokingly) what would you do or say if i had an std? he said if it was an incurable disease like herpes or HIV i wouldent be able to be with you thats too great of a risk. I just coulent tell him!!! and an hour later we were having sex (unprotected) =/ i felt horrible! and the next day i seen him i knew i had to tell him. He knows i have an eye disease (i have occular herpes as well) and i started the conversation up again after he asked repeatedly what my eye disease was. I told him i wasent yet ready to tell him but i think its time he should know. He said well if its nothing i can get take your time, && then i droped it on him, i said well then we need to have a talk. I just came out and said i have genital herpes. At first he seemed really upset and stressed out, and then said something that made my heart drop! he said "i went down on you thats nasty as f*uck!" (he preformed oral sex on me". I just got up and started to walk out the door. He grabed my hand and told me to sit, he said its gonna be alright and that he dosent regreting anything.. It hasen't come up since. He is soo supportive and i am truely grateful that he understands and can look past something that 1 in 4 americans have. Soon everybody in this world will have some strand of the herpes virus. It is extreamly common to have these days, if a man cant look past this hes not the one for you. Keep looking, keep informing, and i promise you will find the right one soon. Just a tip! when your telling your potential sex partners that you have genital herpes avoid negative words, and try to makee it as positive as possible. Explain how 1-4 americans have this virus, that you take valtrex (which prevents the risk of transmission tremedously), female to male transmission is less likely. Avoid words like incurable disease, painful open sores, ect.. ect. Just know your facts before you go and talk to them. Honestly forget about this loser who cant look past this disease. Im proud of you for letting him know, a lot of people dont inform their partners that they even have this virus and thats why it's growing soo rapidly. Feel free to email me at anytime! i would love to help you with any questions you may have.. or if you just feel like you need and want to talk to someonne who actually knows first hand what you are going through or if you just need some support im hear for you. Good luck =) god bless. Hope ive helped!"

Steve S replied: "There are websites for people with infectious diseases to date on. THere are Yahoo groups for the same thing so do not be discouraged . There are support groups for people with herpes. The reaction that you got is not unusual, people fear that which they do not understand. So you are going to be greiving this loss but you can move on and try to avoid dating people that are not infected. Since I am HIV pos I only date other HIV pos people because I have had this same experience. do not let this stop you from dating just work around it. If you want to chat sometime about this hit me up ."

Who else thinks this is a serious problem??? I know every generation pushes the envelope with music and adults are always complaining about the music but it has really gone too far. I recently went into a local store and the song "Crazy Bi*ch" by BuckCherry was playing on the radio. I was horrified especially since two young boys were at the front counter close to the radio with their mother. I'm assuming nobody was paying attention to the music but Good God Man! And what about the Lollipop song??? Then you've got TV and all those Cialis and Viagra commercials saying make sure you're healthy enough for sexual activity or Valtrex commercials talking about herpes. My kids like to watch Charmed but even those girls are major sluts! And movies are bad too. Pretty much every movie has to have a sex scene in it. A perfectly good movie for kids and there has to be that ONE scene in every last one of them. Kids lose their innocence so quickly now a days and it is so sad!!! So my question isIs there any hope for children to remain virgins until adulthood???

? replied: "I definitely think it is a major problem we don't need our little ones knowing about that till they are older because they still start asking questions and wanting too try things"

Ginsy13 replied: "uum most likely a ok Chance. but me and my friend we just joke around. but i know i will be a virgin til i am married. because the is a lot of things going a round with like ads. i do not want to get it."

Inindianmama replied: "I sure hope so cause I have 7 children and thank god only 2 of them are girls. I'm not saying that things are different for boys when it comes to having SEX but for girl and my girls they are 16 and 15 and to this day they both are virgins. I always say its how they are raised and if you do a good job then they will wait until at least they are with that special one."

mommyandbaby replied: "Now a days its left up to parents. Lock your door and never let them go outside. Stick them in a church and never let them leave. The reason why society has fallen apart is because we cant beat our kids anymore. So since kids can get away with anything they turn into man whores and sluts. I blame it on our government for taking away punishment towards our kids, although some parents have took it to far and locked them in a basement or beat them to death or left them in a hot car. There really isnt much to do but hope that your kid doesnt turn out all crazy and stuff."
