Has anyone been precribed a vaginal gel (metronidazole) for vaginosis? I was prescribed this today by my doctor and she said that the gel will help to eliminate the foul odor she also gave me the yeast pill to take? Will the vaginal gel make the odor go away permanently or only temporally? she told me to do one application for 5 days at bedtime?

Rachel replied: "This is an anti-infective. Flagyl It should clear the infection up and take care of the odor."

curious replied: "I was on it few times already in the last 3 years. My doctor said that if you had bacterial vaginosis once, there are more chances you will get it again."

Bacterial Vaginosis-metronidazole did not clear it up, what should i request next? Oh my im in trouble !! I have Bacterial Vaginosis as well as a yeast infection, according to my OBGYN. She gave me the seven day Metronidazole as well as the one day yeast infecton pill to take on the last day to wipe out the yeast infection. I still have discharge that smells like BV. Should i panic? Is there such thing as "incurable" Bacterial Vaginosis or yeast infection? what should i ask for?? please help!!!! Thanks:)

rachellynn200 replied: "Your doctor just might not have given you something strong enough to wipe it out.Just call the office and tell them what is going on.I had the same thing 6 years ago it went away just fine but I don't remember what the doctor gave me to take."

tweetay replied: "Report this to the same doctor that you seen prior. There could be other issues going on that he may need to treat differently."

lga4 replied: "It might not be the right antibiotic. Talk to your doctor and he or she will think of something else that may help."

nursejada replied: "Assuming you have completed your prescribed course of treatment your symptoms should be clearing up. If you are still symptomatic and have had no improvement, you may ask your doctor for a recheck. Sometimes they prescribe Cleocin (Clindamycin) in addition to Flagyl (Metronidazole). Generally, either one of these medications work great for BV. Your doctor should have obtained cultures to help determine the infection source."

mompoo replied: "Two different antibiotics are recommended as treatment for BV: metronidazole or clindamycin."

lehley68 replied: "I'm so sorry you are having problems. I really don't have any advice, just a question. I'm taking metronidazole right now for the same thing. Is there anything you did to make the pill easier to take? I swear, that thing just dissolves on my tongue the second I take it and I threw up the first time, almost threw up on the second dose I just took. I hope this clears my problem up. Thanks! =)"

Metronidazole for bacterial vaginosis while breast feeding.? My OB prescribed Metronidazole for bacterial vaginosis. It says on the packaging that it IS excreted into my breast milk and to ask my doctor about the risks to my baby. It's Friday night so the doc's office is closed...anyone been prescribed this while breast feeding? What did your doc say about the side effects to your baby? If I supplement formula for a week should I just pump and dump to keep up my supply?

Gr8fullMoMMyOf2 replied: "I work in pharmacy, and am also a Breast feeding mommy of 6 month old. I honestly would supplement with formula until your done with the medicine. Any drug that says it IS excreted into Breast milk says that for a reason. It is to for warn you about the possible risks of side effects that can be passed to your baby through your milk.... Here is a site of a drug website look up the drug there and warnings- Drugs.com.. Hope that helps.. Good luck =)"

andrewseaford@rocketmail.com replied: "As i understand it there are no side effects and its best to get the bacterial vaginosis cleared up which the metronidazole will do but if you are concerned in any way I would not take it. there are many ways to clear BV. You understand that BV is an inflammation of the vagina caused by the build up of gardnerella bacteria. you could try taking Acidophilus supplements which increase good bacteria or Lactobacillus. You can also try eating yogurt with live cultures in such as Activia."

How long does it take for metronidazole to take effect for vaginosis? I took 4 500mg tabs all at once as prescribed 24 hours ago and the symptoms are still there. How long should it take to make the infection go away?

linda c replied: "It will probably take a couple of days, and there is a chance that you may need to treat it again. Its tough to get rid of.Also if you have a sexual partner, they need to take it as well.It can pass between the two of you. Some people think it can't be passed through sex,but it in fact can.My doctor made a point of prescribing enough for me and my husband for that reason. Also wash any bathing suits, leotards etc.Its very easy to get it again."

bacterial vaginosis - metronidazole? my doctor prescribed me metronidazole for bacterial vaginosis, but there are no instructions on how to take them...can anyone help? there are 4 individual tablets in the pack and i've had them for a few weeks.....I know your supposed to leave a certain amount of time between taking them but i'm not sure how much? I don't want to take too many at one time...also would they have expired by now? please help! thanks :)

TTC Baby #2 replied: "Call the pharmacy where you got them from or call the doctor."

~Pleasure N Pain~ replied: "I have had that twice..not fun I have only taken the pills once ..the cream insert is allot more effective I believe it should be two one day ...but it should say on the bottle call the pharmacist"

Will yeast infection medicine (metronidazole cream) treat bacterial vaginosis? I am going to try fem-dophilus to treat my BV or what I think is bacterial vaginosis. It itches a little but mostly stings a llittle and has a horrible odor. Gave birth 4 weeks ago. Is this common in women who have recently given birth due to hormonal changes and everything that the vagina has gone through also I had mastitis so I took antibiotics for it and I think it may have caused this.

Mitochondria Eve replied: "Metronidazole cream or pill is the most common treatment for bacterial vaginosis. However, antibiotics usually cause yeast infections, not bacterial ones. I would have it tested before taking any meds- sounds more like a yeast infection to me."

ckalmaoui replied: "I am married to a family doctor, and hear many stories of female problems, especially bacterial vag. but since you have had a baby 4 weeks ago, I truly believe you should see ur OB GYN , there may be still birth matter in your utterus that needs to shed. This can be dangerous if left untreated the proper way. I had a miscarriage about 6 months ago, had to get a DC, but a week after I too had some smell and I just wanted to crawl out of my skin, but finally one day a small piece of uterine lining came out and all the smell was gone, so this is why I am telling you about the left over material, please check with your doc ASAP. Good luck and congrats on your baby!"

Is it normal for someone to take Metronidazole for 14 days to treat Bacteria Vaginosis??? My doctor said I seems you have more than one bacteria infection. So he prescribed one tablet Fluconazole and 14 dys of Metronidazole.

monkeyshavefeelingsto replied: "dildo"

atheism_and.rats replied: "ewww. Women are disgusting creatures."

Eggmcmuffin replied: "Yes it's normal. The metronidazole is a broad spectrum antibiotic which will get rid of the bacteria and parasites however it will wipe out all the good bacteria as well. That is why he gave you the fluconazole which is anti fungal. The antibiotic can increase your chances of a yeast infection so thats why you need to medications."

found out i have bacterial vaginosis gross i know but the doc gave me Metronidazole? im 4months pregnant she said eveything will be fine once i finish the med in 7 days but im still worried any advice??all i see is it will cause premature birth and she said the baby will be fine but im still concerned??adviiceee pleassse thankss

stephy replied: "I got bv when I was pregnant with my daughter. It is very important that you start taking the medicine right away and that you finish the dosage. Your baby will be fine. If you had let it go for a long time then something could have happened. Also do not have sex while taking the medication. Most likely your doctor will want to check you after you are done with the medicine to make sure it's all gone. But you would probably be able to tell yourself by the smell and stuff. btw- I let my bv go for almost a month before I told my doctor. And I have a very healthy baby."

desira replied: "its sounds like your taking anti-biotics. i remember i had to do that which is good that eman they found soemthing and you need to take that to cure what ever u have so the baby wont catch it or it wont cause damage. i thinkl more problems will come from you not taking the pills then from you just doing as the doc tells you. if you have question research it or ask your doc or l&d office"

Brittany [22 weeks to go.] replied: "just take the medicine, all of it. if your doctor said the baby will be fine, then the baby will be fine. she is the doctor, she knows what she is talking about!! but be sure to take all of the medicine!!"

mom 2 be replied: "I've had it twice now and I'm 9 months pregnant. I haven't had any problems because of it really. My only problem is the antibiotic, the same on you have, kills all bacteria, even the good ones. This causes an imbalance when the bacteria is returning from being killed from the meds. This caused me to get a yeast infection. Cleared up easily by monostat. Now back to normal and just waiting on my little guy. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to prevent it, it's just the bacteria and hormones."

JennyG replied: "I suffered from cronic bacterial vaginosis for years. No matter how hard I tried to get rid of it kept coming back. I tried all the medications but after doing some research I learned that 77% of women treating BV with antibiotics suffer from reoccurrence within months. I found a site that taught me how to treat BV naturally without all the harsh medications. Theres alot of good information here so hopefully it can help you too. Good Luck! "
