How much does Wellbutrin effect your sex drive? My doctor prescribed me Wellbutrin for depression, but I was reading and noticed that it is also used to treat sexual disfunction. I haven't told my doctor but my sex drive is -0 will this help me a lot? He prescribed me 300 mg's a day

Have any women seen an increased libido using Wellbutrin? My wife is currently taking Lexapro and her sex drive has gone to zero where she never wants to have sex. Her doctor said Lexapro is a "libido killer" and prescribed her Wellbutrin. Have any other gals out there had a similar situation and what were your results especially relating to your libido? I just want to know what to expect with this change. Thanks!

creativereading replied: "I was actually on Wellbutrin for two years. I have never been on any other medications. It did not affect my libido at all. I was 22 - 25 at the time. It was a very healthy appetite."

mrdoolie6 replied: "I am on both meds. I have notice an increase in my libido but I thought it was just menopause!"

nursing student replied: "I looked up Wellbutrin in "Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses" and it states under indications, treatment of depression, smoking cessation, unlabeled uses, treatment of ADHD in adults, and (much to my surprise) To increase sexual desire in women."

Should I be weened of Zoloft when switching to Wellbutrin? I am in Thailand. My doctor here has switched me from Zoloft to Wellbutrin to treat my depression. There was no weening off of the Zoloft. Just Zoloft one day, and Wellbutrin the next. Is this normal? I am just curious because I have been feeling very strange lately. I am off Zoloft "cold-turkey" for one week now, and using Wellbutrin instead. I must say that I do not feel better. My sex drive has returned, which is good, but my depression has returned with it. What should I do? I am open to all suggestions!

BH replied: "Speak to your doctor about this. S/he should have told you if there was a best way to switch from one drug to the other, especially if they aren't the same "family" of chemicals."

Justin replied: "YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES"

mlgable replied: "Since one drug was replaced for the other that is ok. You need to give the drug one more week and if it still hasn't helped then call your doctor and let him know that it is not working so the doctor can decide what your next option is."

Jim C replied: "GET OFF!!! GET OFF NOW!!! I lost a job because my doctor switched me from Zoloft to Wellbutrin. I'm now on Citalopham and doing great. Drop what you're doing and make an appointment NOW!!! Tell him it's an emergency!!!"

MICHAEL M replied: "Normally, you would gradually ween off the zoloft, while gradually increasing dosage onto the wellbutrin. Jerking your brain chemicals aound like that is not adviseable. You also should be monitered very closely during the switch. See another doctor. This is your mind and feelings, not something to fool around with."

Broj7400 replied: "Detox, stop taking pills, its only an addictive band aid and it supports quack doctors and pharmaceutical companies. Try alternative or natural means to treat your depression. When you visit a doctor, all they want to do is give you pills."

meggus31 replied: "I agree with Michael M. I was recently switched from Effexor to Cymbalta. For 3 days at a time, I decreased my Effexor dosage and increased my Cymbalta. The whole cross-over took 1 month and I suffered minimal effects."

Samantha1 replied: "It takes a while for the Wellbutrin to kick in. At least I know it did for me. But I wasn't going off Zoloft, cold turkey. Sometimes doctors try to find a combination of anti-depressants that will work for you. I know the sex drive coming back is a great thing. Whenever my doctor changed my meds or added something to whatever I was taking, I would always call him and let him know how I was feeling. Your doctor may have to lower the dosage, or add something else with it to get you stabilized. I felt like I was a lab rat for a while, but we finally found what works and I'm sticking to it. I know first hand what the "black hole" depression feels like and I don't ever want to go back there again. Some days are always better than others, I mean you can't always feel absolutely wonderful, right? I mean life stuff still happens, which kinda gets us down, but stick to it and listen to your body and mind and the way you feel. Call your doctor and let him/her know. And don't stay indoors...when you start to feel the depression coming, go outside. I promise, it helps, even when getting out of bed and going outside is the last thing you want to do. Just do it!!!!! Happy Holidays! And count your blessings. Make a gratitude list of all the things you have to be thankful for. I do, and that also helps. Good Luck."

Anatta replied: "I am not a doctor, I am a Registered Nurse with a Master's Degree and I have over 32 years experience working in the Psychiatric Field. It is not good to listen to any advice which contradicts what your doctor is saying !! If you have any questions, any doubts of any sort, trust and speak openly to your doctor. Follow the advice of your doctor. Keep an open line of communication with him or her. I am not a doctor as I have shared with you, so I can not diagnose or suggest better medications, "and no one else should either. If they do, disregard their advice." Tell your doctor what your experiencing, and all the side effects; keep on open line of communication !! "Most people while under the care of their Psychiatrist, also see a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, to learn excellent coping strategies. This I can say I most beneficial for anyone taking any kind of medications. But I completely understand if you can not afford going to see a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist. "It's VERY Expensive !!" There is a better alternative !!! What I always recommend to my patients, who are also my friends, is reading and practicing the techniques that are in the books by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD. in order to learn effective coping strategies. His techniques have been scientifically proven to be Very Effective for people throughout the entire World, & not just for people taking medications. His techniques help a great deal for all people dealing with depression, anxiety, stress, worry, racy thoughts, loniness, etc.; and for Anyone who simply need to calm down, relax, and find peace !! A person can buy his books online at Amazon.com for half the cost of the purchase of Book Stores. A very good book to start with is one called: "Coming to Our Senses," (by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD). Also he and Dr. Andrew Weil, I believe have an audio CD book which helps a person deal effectively with sickness, stress, pain, and suffering. Anything, by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD especially, as well Dr. Andrew Weil is Most Excellent, and provides all the wholesome, successful coping strategies that a person needs. But please keep an honest, trusting open line of communication with your doctor. "And PLEASE most definately learn and daily practice the coping strategies taught by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD. & "Thubten Chodron" Lastly for you, and/or anyone - which struggles with anger occasionally or quite often, I highly recommend reading the book: "Working with Anger" BY: Thubten Chodron. This book has all the answers for successfully dealing with anger (and also anxieties of all sort, depression, worry, stress and pain), and reveals all the alternatives, giving sound advice on how to practice these strategies in order to live a more happy, productive, and peaceful life. "Anything written by her IS definately Most Excellent !!" I have this book by her (she is a Psychologist), as well as many books by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD, and Dr. Andrew Weil. It is never a good idea to recommend a book to a person, which you have not read and practiced yourself. This is my philosophy, and it holds much truth !! Follow the advice of your Doctor !!! And I hope you take my advice, on those 2 books: "Coming to Our Senses" Jon Kabat-Zinn and "Working with Anger" Thubten Chodron, to help with effective, successful coping strategies. Love Yourself. Take good care of yourself. Eat healthy. Always be kind to yourself, and forgive yourself for any past mistakes or future mistakes you may make. And please do not be critical of yourself. You are special. You are very important. And You are Loved by many !! You asked a Very Good Question."

wellbutrin SR sexual side effects? i know that SSRI's like prozac and zoloft can cause a decrease in sexual desire, also they are used as a treatment for premature ejaculation as they delay orgasm. What does wellbutrin do? ive read that it doesnt have any dampering effects on sexual function, but can even be used to enhance sex. SO does wellbutrin then lead to premature ejaculation, hypersexuality?

Sar replied: "Wellbutrin doesn't have any sexual dysfunction like the SSRI's or the SNRI's do. I have not read anything about causing Premature ejaculation, or hypersexuality. But if the drug does it's job to improve depression symptoms (such as lose of interest, fatigue. Dpression can also lead to sex problems) the person may have greater interest in sex or other pleasurable activities."

King Derrick Lovebug replied: "Unless Wellbutrin is an SSRI, I don't think it will have the same side effects. Zoloft, Prozac and the other SSRIs can decrease sex drive and erection quality...and also delay ejaculation The reason that SSRIs help people last longer during sex are that they increase Serotonin levels. It appears that low serotonin can trigger premature ejaculation Check this out: "Low Serotonin Levels can cause Premature Ejaculation""

P J replied: "This is a bit simplified but I hope this helps. Dopamine is an important brain chemical involved in sexual function. Drugs like viagra enhance dopamine's effects and improve erectile function. SSRIs alter serotonin but also affect dopamine in the brain and this is thought to be why they affect sexual function. Wellbutrin (chemical name Bupropion) is a different class of chemical that has less negative effects on dopamine and it is thought that this is why it is associated with less sexual dysfunction. I have looked through some of the scientific and drug company literature and I can't find any evidence or de ions of wellbutrin causing hypersexuality or premature ejaculation. There have been quite a few studies done. Some studies in people with sexual dysfunction found a trend towards improved ejaculatory performance on bupropion, as you suggest but it does not appear to have been reported as a side effect. That is not to say it is not possible. HTH"

John N replied: "I used wellbutrin to stop smoking. Yeah, it does enhance sex quite a bit. I never found it to affect premature ejaculation, but then again, I don't have that problem."

Did Wellbutrin SR work for you? I'm on it at the moment for depression, and I'm wondering if it's worth it. If anyone could tell me their past or current experiences using Wellbutrin SR, that would be great. Also, I know that sometimes it causes weight LOSS. I didn't think that it would because usually anti-depressants cause weight GAIN. I'm a 21 year old female 5' 6" that weighed about 127 pounds before taking it and only a month into it am down ten pounds to 117. Is this ok? I am a little scared about it. Also, did anyone notice an increase in sex drive? Please tell me anything you can about it. Thank you soo much!

CALiGiRL<3 replied: "You have nothing to loose."

jeepwife4ever replied: "I'm on it right now and I think it's better than most. It does take time before you see a difference. I don't think you should lose any more weight though."

The Koala replied: "I have done very well with Wellbrutrin. Like any anti-depressant it takes a while to take effect, and does so slowly enough you might not notice yourself feeling better. The weightloss I didn't really experience, though I wouldn't worry about it too much. Wellbutrin is the only anti-depressant with no possible loss of sex drive, and the increase your experiencing might be the result of just increased energy."

erica h replied: "I WAS ON WELLBUUTRIN FOR A YEAR AND I LOVED IT I WASA UP TO 450MG SEX I WANTED MORE THAN WHEN I WAS ON OTHER STUFF. I CAN'T SAY MUCH ABOUT WEIGHT BECAUSE I WAS ON OTHER STUFF FOR SLEEP AND THEY MAKE U PUT ON THE WEIGHT ONE THING IS THAT YOU CAN GO ANY HIGHER THAN 450MG. BUT IF YOU CAN STAY ON IT I WOULD HAVE I LOVE IT"

Ben B replied: "I had a girlfriend on it. Sex drive was WOW. I think she really did good on it(not counting the sex), but it kept her up at night apparently and she didn't like that. I am currently taking Efexor XR. I lost about twenty pound in a month. I think you will find that it is the depression that is causing the weight loss. Most mood stabilizers take 6-8 weeks to take full effect."

Cleo replied: "Different medications work differently for different people. Wellbutrin did NOT work for me. It was the first thing I was prescribed when I was diagnosed with severe depression 8 1/2 years ago (I was 24 then), and it did exactly the opposite of what it was supposed to do: it made me even more emotional and even more irritable. I was only on it for one month before I switched to Paxil. Wellbutrin did not affect my sex drive one way or the other. Paxil decreased my sex drive. Neither drug affected my weight. Years later I switched to Prozac, which I liked better than both Wellbutrin and Paxil. You have to find out what works best for you, which involves being open with your doctor (who you should ask about your weight loss), and which may or may not involve some trial and error. Unless the Wellbutrin is making you worse, stay on it for at least a month (most antidepressants take that long to really start working), be open with your doctor about any fears you may have, and take it from there. Good luck."

anonymous replied: "I am currently on Wellbutrin SR. The pharmaceutical name is Bupropian. Wellbutrin is not considered a "weight gain" anti-depressant. I also lose weight when taking Wellbutrin SR. If you are concerned about too much weight loss, you may want to consider increasing your caloric intake. Breakfast drinks and nutritional bars are an easy way to get more calories. Wellbutrin SR SR stand for Sustained Release. The medicine is released over a period of time into your bloodstream. These are typically 150 mg. tablets and taken twice a day. Do not take the second tablet past 5 PM, as you may have problems with insomnia. This drug is also known under the name Zyban which is a medication used to stop smoking. Wellbutrin XL which is their new one a day tablet (if you are taking 300 mg, the typical dose). XL stands for Extended Release. Then, there is the plain wellbutrin without any letters behind it. This medication goes into your system instantly. This isn't prescribed very often because it must be taken many times during the day to keep up the levels needed to perform it's job. All of the Wellbutrin (with and without letters) are basically the same drug. The difference is how they are released into your bloodstream. Obviously, the more evenly the drug is distributed, the better the effects. Some anti-depressants decrease sex drive. Wellbutrin (along with most of the newer anti-depressants) do not decrease sex drive. It is not unusual to see an increase in sex drive. If this fits your lifestyle, appropriately, it is not something to be concerned about. If you feel that the side-effects are too much to handle, you may want to discuss this with your prescribing physician. There are many, many anti-depressants out there. The goals of these drugs are to make you feel more comfortable and have a better quality of life."

Poetgirl76 replied: "Wellbutrin has been very effective for me. I've been on it (in combination with other meds because I am bipolar) for 8 years (both the SR and XL forms). In the very beginning it did cause loss of appetite, but that eventually went away. I had to remind myself to eat during that time, which was strange. This medication is different than most antidepressants (it works on different neurotransmitters)...it has a low risk or weight gain or sexual side effects (decreased libido, inability to orgasm, etc.) ...side effects that are common in all (or almost all) other antidepressants. Definitely tell your doctor about your weight loss. I'm pretty sure you are significantly under weight at this point."

Does Wellbutrin help treat Generalized Anxiety Disorder? I am currently on Effexor, which has been extremely helpful in reducing my anxiety levels. However, I am now (after 4 months of Effexor) experiencing major sexual side effects. Prior to using Effexor I was on Paxil. Paxil also helped reduce anxiety, but caused a complete disappearance of sex drive and arousal. I want something that will keep my anxiety low and my sex drive high (which is was before.) Anyone know if Wellbutrin does the trick or is that just for depression? Help!!

jabswifeforever replied: "I am thinking it does because my mom in law and her sister both take it and they love it. I tried it personally but had to stop because it was expensive."

A. R. M. replied: "It depends on your problem and personal chemistry. I had a friend whose mother went on Wellbutrin and ended up in the mental hospital. Lexapro had a similar effect on me, but Lexapro has helped my uncle and a friend of mine. So you won't know until you try basically. It might, it might not."

J G replied: "I know that anxiety can be a side effect of wellbutrin. However, when i started on wellbutrin for depression it also took care of my severe social anxiety and slight general anxiety as well. Im not sure it is a direct thing or if my anxiety was somehow due to my depression. Wont be the same for everyone but that is my experience"

me replied: "Ways to treat anxiety; Drink a glass of ICE cold water or suck on an ice cube, the cold hits a nerve at the back of the throat and slows your heart down. Focus on every little detail around you, hinges of a chair, pattern on the walls, anything in minute detail. It will help distract you, talk them through to yourself. Breathe in for 4 out for 4, breathe deep put your hand on your stomach and when you breathe in push the hand out. for a few minutes. Propanalol helps with physical affects of anxiety, stops you shaking and slows your heart down. I am on 40mg prn. I suffer badly with anxiety and i have taken also Lorazepam but this is highly addictive. i also take Seroquel 50mg when i feel anxious prn. I learnt the techniques when i was an inpatient at a private psychiatric hospital. I also attach a useful link below.... I hope some of this info helped. Good luck"

Alice B replied: "Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc. Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level. But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc. The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them! Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to.... Extracted from Source."

Smoking and acne & Sex? Okay, first question: Do any of you notice a difference when smoking and acne? For me, I notice when I smoke for the first time in a while, my skin is more likely to have a couple new pimples. But here's the weird thing: I've been smoking every-day, 5-10 cigs a day for the past week, and my skin was perfectly fine. In fact it seemed to be getting clearer (I'm sure it was from the new cleaner I was using for my face). But when I stopped smoking, the day I stopped smoking and the day after is when my skin had a couple tiny whiteheads forming. Kinda weird. When I STOPPED smoking they showed up? Why would that be? was the smoking making me less stressed, causing less breakouts? Or maybe it was un-related and just happened at the same time. Also, does smoking effect erections at all? I heard smoking constricts blood vessels, so it can make it harder to get one. Is this true? And if so, how long after smoking is this true for? Does it last 1 hr, 2 hrs, 5 hrs, 24 hours? I noticed a few days ago that when masterbating, I kept losing it. It was the first time it ever happened to me. The ONLY two things that where new was A.) I was smoking 5-10 cigs a day for the first time in a while and B.) I was on day 3 of Wellbutrin (but i heard very rarely does wellbutrin cause sexual side effects. If anything it sometimes it used to INCREASE sex drive). So it was weird. But then the other day I smoked all day, then was able to get one pretty easily, after I quit the wellbutrin for 2 days. Hmm.. I'm talking about regular Cigarette smoking. I didnt even realize i forgot to mention that above LOL

J_A_N_I_C_E replied: "yep."

Roger R replied: "smoking weed affects your sex drive & ultimately it destroys erections. smoking does not affect acne - spots as a cause of smoking or not smoking is in your imagination. not being able to masturbate will also be something to do with your imagination ...."

Spirit Journey replied: "I don't think your smoking and break outs have anything to do with each other. As far as Welbutrin being the cause of your inability to sustain an erection, it can indeed contribute to sexual dysfunction, however normally it takes being on it longer than just a few days for this to happen. On the other hand, everyone is different in how their individual bodies react to a medication so it's very possible the Welbutrin is to blame. If it continues, talk to your primary care physician about it and perhaps he can try a different kind of a drug on you. There are many different anti-depressants on the market and sooner or later you'll find one with little to no side affects. It is important however, that once you start these drugs, take them exactly as prescribed or you are defeating the purpose."

Can the use of Wellbutrin or Lexapro be waivered for MEPS? Ugh. I just found out that I've been DQd by MEPS. I assume that it's because I take Wellbutrin to counteract my birth control pill, which decrease my sex drive. The birth control pill have been prescribed to eliminate my menstrual cycle in order to eliminate mood swings. Historically, I've taken Lexapro to stabilize the moodswing but the right birth control pill does same thing (yeah!). So, yes, I have a chemical imbalance that is strictly tied to my cycle and it's called PMDD or PreMenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. I scored a 99 on the ASVAB, have a college degree and I am *trying* to go OCS. I cannot believe that this medication/hormonal imbalance can stop me in my tracks. I'm thinking that I will need to try to waiver the DQ and am wondering if anyone knows my chances of succeeding. It's my understanding that if the Army wants/needs me bad enough, it can happen -- but that's solely based on internet research -- I figured I'd ask here (for $#!T$ and giggles.) No snide comments please.

charcoalrocknroll replied: "Yeah, they DQ if you're dependent on an antidepressant(reason doesn't matter) for everyday use. That's all they see "ooo antidepressant. big risk. no thanks. bye." I would talk to your doctor and see if he can document the reasons why you're taking wellbutrin and/or see if you can try a different med that won't DQ you."

Is Wellbutrin good for panic disorder? I took Paxil for 9 years (40 mg) for Panic Disorder and am almost completely off of it and onto Lexapro (10mg). The reason for the change was several factors: weight gain (when I NEVER gained weight no matter how hard I tried), no sex drive on Paxil. Now that I'm almost off of Paxil and onto Lex, i'm worried about the continuing issue with my weight. Paxil was FABULOUS for my anxiety and Lex has been fine so far too (except for diarrhea), but would Wellbutrin XL be better to take b/c it doesn't report as much weight gain? I tried it once before (taking it with Paxil to help increase sex drive...it didn't do anything) but am unsure if it's good for panic since i've really only heard of it being used for depression. Any experience with this????? I will be discussing this with my doc this week, but wanted to hear from personal experience with those who have used Wellbutrin for panic and how it affected weight/anxiety symptoms. I've had anywhere from minor to major diarrhea the entire time on Lexapro.

booktender replied: "I think you need to ask your doctor this. Lexapro is often prescribed for people with anxiety and/or depression."

Cleo B replied: "Try Celexa, Wellbutrin didn't do squat for me."

bishopguy06 replied: "With your doctor's supervision I might try several. I started with Zoloft for panic attacks and it was mediocre. I have been on Effexor for years now and it works great for me. Other people I know have very different experiences than my own with the same meds. I just don't know how to predict your response since, from my experience, it is personal. Good luck :)"

Calvin W replied: "I was prescribed welbutrin for depresion and it made me very irratable and I quit. Then years later I figured out I had a severe case of add(no thanks to the 200 dollar an hour doctors, my wife and I had to research my symptons on the web)Again they wanted to start me on mood stabilizers sugesting welbutrin and others. I finnally ended up with the right diagnosis of add and now take the right meds. Probably the same flow of treatment your getting. If its not giving adequate relife I'm sure next they'll try clonipyne and then xanex"

Max replied: "Wellbutrin can cause psychotic/suicidal/manic type symptoms in some rare cases. I've seen it happen and its bizarre and quite frightening. I doubt seriously this will happen to you though. Has the Lexapro caused you stomach problems the entire time you've taken it? If so, I think Zoloft (Sertraline) would be a good alternative to Lexapro. Celexa and Lexapro are the same drug by the way. The company basically changed the name of the drug. Talk to your doctor about Zoloft (Sertraline) and its effectiveness with anxiety. I have not heard clients report weight gain with either Wellbutrin or Zoloft."

Mary S replied: "Everyone responds differently to these type of medications so what works for one person may not work for another. Welbutrin is used to treat depression disorders and symptoms of anxiety. Depending on the individual, you may experience weight loss or weight gain. These medications will not increase your sex drive. Your sex drive may be increased if your depression is lifted due to effective medication but unfortunatly a common side effect of these medications are a decrease in sex drive so its ahrd to strike a balance. I would in fact discuss this with your doctor in order to find the right balance for you becsue reactions and side effects are very individual. Hope this helps :)"

bry7josh replied: "Try Celexa! Wellbutrin did nothing for me either! Talk to your doctor! hugs!"

Dofka replied: "All i can say is GET OFF LEXAPRO. Its terrible - when you do ween yourself off of it, it has terrible withdrawal effects. I was on 20mg for a few months and stopped it cold turkey. I thought i was dying, seriously,....its miserable. Read some other websites on withdrawals and Lexapro. Im sorry I cant say much for Wellbutrin."

waitingxx replied: "I know you want feed back from others,I suggest you follow the Doc only."

LAURIE P replied: "Wellbutrin can make some people feel very hyper and jittery. Take what is working best for you. What is more important ? Weight gain or good mental health?"

FEEDBACK PLEASE! About effects of wellbutrin...? I already asked this but no body responded :( I used to take zoloft, but it made me feel like a robot & i had no sex drive. Now that I take 300 mg of wellbutrin. I feel very giggly and content, horny, and Ive talked to my doctor but I want some personal experiences and feedback. Thanks.

passionate*one replied: "Welbutrin is a mood enhancer so the giggles are normal, but 300 mg is double what I am taking so I'm thinking it's kinda strong, but your doctor of course, knows best- if you feel like your too giggly or overly excited you should mention this to your doctor and see if a smaller dose works better. My welbutrin also makes me horny all the time (my poor husband!) so that is completely normal. The horniness isn't all bad though, b/c you can always get a 'buzz lightyear' ;) Good luck with everything!"
