About Ultram Hydrocodone in Q&A
Does Ultram and Hydrocodone have the same chemical makeup? I ask because I am severely allergic to Ultram (hallucinations and severe itching) but I can take hydrocodone. I still itch with that one but can usually either tolerate the itching or take an allergy medication to stop the itching. So if they aren't the same but have one chemical that is the same that I am allergic to why can I take one but not the other?

ghost replied: "Ultram mimics a light codeine, it is not hydrocodone, hydrocodone is a controlled substance. Ultram may become a controlled substance someday, but more people are allergic to it, and it is less addicting to most people. I'm one of the few people who actually like ultram but then I'm allergic to real codeine."

Why would I prefer the pain relief, and feeling of Ultram, over Hydrocodone? I know most people go crazy for Hydrocodone, but I think Ultram is better.

Ima Vegan replied: "Different strokes for different folks."

FlyfreeIzzieUCSD replied: "well the good thing about ultram is that it's pretty much non-addictive so if it works, than great."

Nate J replied: "Depends on the severity of the pain. The cause of the pain has alot to do with it as well I got better relief from aspirin than Ultram. Good for you to be able to use the "lighter" stuff. I am currently on 50mg of FENTANYL"

heart_attack6969 replied: "if you can take ultram and it works, stay with it, i've been addicted to hydrcodone and oxycodone for years and nothing else works for me,the withdrawls from a narcotic pain killer sucks, dont put your self thru the misery, stick with ultram"

KB23 replied: "I say good for you if you like the Ultram more. If it works for your pain, stick to it. It isn't as addicting as all the other pain killers out there."

Mary P replied: "read labels might be the difference in medications."

Can Ultram ease Hydrocodone withdrawals? Can Ultram ease Hydrocodone withdrawals?

Billie77 replied: "It might take the edge off of the withdrawals. But it's really very mild and doesn't have a narcotic affect. You should talk to your doctor about how much you should reduce the Hydrocodone and ask for help with reducing this drug."

Can you have hydrocodone for pain if you are on ultram? I'm taking ultram for my lowr it isn't working. Any adcive?

12pleze replied: "Why is it that people do not want to know how to fix pain p[problem but seek pain pills which will do nothing for fixing pain."

Drewby replied: "If your health care provider has prescribed it for you, then yes. It is perfectly fine to combine the medicines. I do it for chronic pain everyday."

Will ultram help with hydrocodone withdrawals? will ultram help w/hydrocodone withdrawals? Thank You.

nehru jacket replied: "the best thing is to just tough it out give it a week or 10 days you will start feeling a little better each day after the first few days hang in there its tough"

Eula replied: "I have worked on a drug unit for many years and I've never known of any of our doctors using ultram for withdrawals but if you have been using hdrocodone for pain it could be helpful as a replacement (non-narcotic) pain med."

rjfpharmd replied: "Absolutely not. Ultram does not affect the appropriate receptors in the brain to mitigate withdrawls. Only another narcotic can stop the symptoms. Narcotic withdrawls almost never life threatening. The only remedy in most cases is tough it out."

Wendy V replied: "Why have you asked 30+ questions on different days of the same question? Or different drugs? All on withdrawl."

Can Ultram (Tramadol) ease Hydrocodone withdrawals? Can Ultram ease Hydrocodone withdrawals?

xx_emo_girl replied: "hmmm it may help... just try not to get addicted to the ultram. that would be all you need xD"

SHIZIE E replied: "Nah, wish they could yo! I went through the same thing about 5mos ago. I was on 10mg 10-20 pills a day, for 3 years. if you take enough ultram, might ease you up for a lil bit, like a couple hours, but you need to go to the hospital and be HONEST about your withdrawals, I went to a Methadone clinic. It costs money but not that much...... they will help you, but if you can go the Rehab route, go that way ,if you have insurance... Goood luck and good vibes yo! You can do IT!!"

dlmickd replied: "Ultram is a non-narcotic pain reliever usually given to patients who no longer need the powerful narcotics like morphine or Oxycontin. Usually, the patient is taken off the narcotics for a couple of weeks before starting ultram because of the possible side effects when using ultram with narcotics still present in the body. I have never heard of ultram used for withdrawal symptoms."

mtgirl22003 replied: "Ultram (Tramadol), is a non- narcotic drug. It is not related chemically to opiates. The with-drawl syndrome is not as severe as with other opiates. Contraindications: use in clients with past or present addiction or opiate dependence or in those with prior history of allergy to codeine or opiates."

ultram to hydrocodone, good or bad ? I have been taking 90, 7.5mg hydrocondone for over a year now and my doctor refered me to a pain clinic. i had went for the first time today and i seen a NP who took me off the hydrocodone and gave me 50mg ultrams along with zanaflex (which make me sick even though i tried to tell her that). I ask if i would have any withdraws since i was suddenly stopping the hydrocodone and i was told that the ultram would take care of that. so after coming home i done some searching about ultram and about %70 of results talk about how ultram can be just as addictive even though it is non narcotic and for some people it can even make your withdraws worse.... i have also read that you should not suddenly stop taking hydrocodone and instead be tapperd off it. so my question is.. is it safe for a person who has been taking hyrocodone for as long as i have to be switched to ultram ?

Dr. Robert Rice replied: "bad - kills liver"

BTriX replied: "Ultram is synthetic opioid medication, so it would act on the same sensors that the Vicodin does. How many vicodins were you taking in a day (I'm assuming 90 in your first paragraph is incorrect)? I personally was able to step down from 5-6 Percocet 10 mgs a day to 4 Ultram 50 mgs a day with no withdrawl. I had other side effects (like the mental addiction) but the physical side-effects were gone. Problem is - when you go to stop taking the Ultram, the withdrawl symptoms will just come back. The best thing to do is just to try and stop taking the Ultram and Vicodin all together (if you can manage) and try only taking Advil or Ibuprofen for the pain. It is a very hard thing to stop taking pain meds - I had a cripling knee injury so for the longest time I was living off of pain meds, but that's no way to live your life. You will be MUCH better off without the Vicodin in the end - TRUST ME! Your liver and your head will thank you!"

VICTORIA L replied: "NO!!!!!!!!!!! First of all, i would go to a different pain clinic!!!!!!! You cannot just STOP taking hydrocodone, you are probably sick by now. The Ultram might help a little but not help the pain like the hydro did. GO TO ANOTHER CLINIC, those people do not know what they are doing!!!!!!!!!!!11"

Shopaholic Chick replied: "call the dr who referred you to the pain clinib and tell him that they switched you to a medication that you advised them you can taken before and got ill and ask him to refer you to a different pain clinic where they will listen to your concerns and discuss everything with you like the addictiveness before they perscribe it for you - sound like you ent to a BAD pain clinic"

Judy B replied: "Ultram can actually BRING ON withdrawal symptoms from narcotics. Your pain management doctor is either a quack or a redneck who believes anyone in pain management is a junkie looking for dope.........been there, done that. Find a NEW PM Doc who has compassion and credentials. Go online, talk to friends or relatives, try the Yellow Pages and/or go back to your Primary Doc to get a referral to proper Pain management. You won't die from withdrawal from that level of narcotics, but you may wish you had for a week or so. Good Pain Management Clinics are, unfortunately, few and far between. With the Federal Gov't's. 0 tolerance policies, they make it really hard for GOOD Doctors to treat chronic pain, and really EASY for quacks and sadists to set up clinics. If all else fails, try your local Emergency Room, and ask the Docs there for a referral. Good luck....it took me 3 months to find a half-assed PM Clinic, and I had to suffer with them for two years before I found a REAL, good Doctor to simply manage my legitimate, chronic pain from multiple broken bones, and considerable hardware to replace missing bone parts. The AMA Website can also be helpful if you live in a Metropolitan area where there are alot of choices available to you, and/or you want to file a complaint against a Doctor. The bottom line is, you don't have to suffer or be treated like a drug addict simply to exist.......keep trying the avenues listed above until you find a Doctor to help you.....the AMA actually IS on the side of patients in chronic pain, it's the Government that thinks we're all drug addicts! To just answer your question, though, it's not necessarily UNSAFE to be switched to Ultram, but it will be mighty UNCOMFORTABLE for a few days!!!!!"

Swm 39 4 Younger Swf Forever replied: "I RECOMMEND COMING OFF OF THE HYDROCODONE AND STAY ON THE ULTRAM AND HAVE YOUR DOCTOR PRESCRIBE CATAPRES FOR WITHDRAWLS"

Jess replied: "Ummm. What is that NP on? You should be tapered off. Go from 7.5mg to 5mg and then 2.5mg. Over a span of a couple of months. I've been through the same situation myself. It is safe to take Ultram though after your dosage regimen has been modified. Good luck. Definitely get a second opinion."

mistysong8 replied: "Dear Friend, My boyfriend and a friend of his both took Hydrocodone as a painkiller for severe pain. The docs told them that they would be on it forever, and they had to go off of it because their livers began to fail. They were not drinkers or anything. They both went cold turkey off the stuff, and endured the short-term sweating and anxiety. I don't know about you, but I would discuss Ultram again with the doctor ... but however you do it, get off the hydrocone as soon as possible. You CAN survive cold turkey, you CAN survive by tapering off, and you CAN survive by using Ultram. I recommend just getting over it, because it is quick and detoxifying. There are then many alternatives to hydrocodone, and, dear girl, I wish you all the best. ~Misty in Elmira, NY"

I like Ultram a lot better than hydrocodone, why is that? I dunno Ann, I didn't withdrawl in jail.

annforeman06 replied: "you know it's like anything else. it comes down to personal prefference.body chemestry etc. I'm not implyinhg you are one but the same thing makes one drug addict prefer speed and one downwers. Ultram although not a narcotic hits many of the same brain receeptors as a narcotic.if you stop abruptly after long periods of use you will experience withdrawl, inability to sleep being the worst"

Will Ultram (tramadol) ease hydrocodone withdrawals? Will Ultram (tramadol) ease hydrocodone withdrawals?

kerrbear replied: "The best thing you can do is be honest with your Dr. and tell him or her about your or whoever you are asking his for about this. They will know the best way to deal with it."

Michelle H replied: "I agree with upper post. Talk to your doc. They will help you (and probably won't lock you up if you have a problem and admit it (if you do)). If you are just transitioning from one to the other via pre ion then the doc should have already told you this. Another route is to call a pharmacy that you don't deal with, stay anonymous, and ask the pharmacist. Make sure you ask for the pharmacist or you may get a tech who doesn't know anything. Pharmacy techs are just anyone off the street who qualifies (no training or degree required pre-employment)"

Yes I am here!! replied: "it will help a little but you can also get an addiction to tramadol. dont try to stop either of them cold turkey. you have to slowly come off."
