has anyone taken klonopim with prozac to treat postpartum depression? I got on prozac 20 mg this week is ok to take it with klonopim for severe anxiety, i can't control. did anyone experience this? severe anxiety? for nothing.

Black Diamond replied: "I take prozac and I've never experienced that. answer mine?"

D replied: "It sounds more like you are having a common postpartum depression as a result of thyroid imbalances... so you may experience this as 'anxiety'... you need to have your TSH checked , it should be .3 to 2 range, so ask, because anything out side that range could still be effecting you... see below I hate prozac, it caused severe depression and anxiety in some people... Also a resource b elow with groups for post partum depression , run by doctors, and info"

andrea W replied: "I wouldnt mix drugs without a doctors pre ion. You never know how drugs will interact with each other and everyone's chemical makeup is different. Just because one set of drugs work for one person, another person might have a completely different reaction. You should ask your doctor."

Terri replied: "if your anti depressant is working and you are getting a proper dose and you have been on the medication long enough to get a therapeutic blood level, then you shouldn't need an anti anxiety which is what klonopin is.You can take them both together. If you don't get results with prozac then ask doc to try something else.Paxil helps me tremendously but I do have to take an occasional xanax which is a miracle drug to treat anxiety but unfortunately because of abusers it is difficult to get a doc to prescribe it.Try imagery and relaxation exercises.Anxiety is horrible."

Ren Hoek replied: "Obviously, I have never experienced PPD, but I have been on Klonopin for years and also, Lexapro (Celexa "double strength") which is similar to Prozac, but much better. The nice thing about Klonopin is that it is mild and its hard to cause harm with it. A good dosage range for Klonopin is 0.5 mg or 1.0 mg twice or three times a day. Be sure and remember that Klonopin kicks in slow and stays with you for long time. Xanax is very effective, but can trigger aggressive and even violent behaviors. NEVER TAKE XANAX WITH ALCOHOL!!"

Treating Depression? I am suffering from severe fatigue, can't sleep at night, can't even take a nap becuase I can't relax. I have tried HTP but it doesn't seem to help. I eat healthy and excercise regulary, I doe have some stress in my life that I am dealing with as best I can. I am taking a proactive approach. The main problem I have is extreme fatigue, no motivation, no energy. total lethargy. Does anyone have any homeopathic suggestions. I am going to my doctor in a week, but I know they want to put me on meds. I don't like prozac or paxil because they mess up your sleep bad.

sarahfina86 replied: "First and foremost you need to see your doctor, and let him/her know your apprehension to taking a pre ion for your depression. In the mean time there are some herbal ways to fight depression and the most common and easiest to find would be: St. John's Wort, Ginkgo Biloba, or fish oil Omega 3. Hope it works out, and you start feeling better. Also if you get some free time, I would reccomend watching "The Secret" or reading the book."

Is this an occasional treatment for depression? I've read online about treating depression (haha go figure) before and remember some instances of reading that a doctor might prescribe prozac + adderall to treat depression which I suppose prozac is to treat the depression and adderall to help boost the patients motivation/ability to get things done which they didn't have enough from the depression.

Plea for Peace! replied: "yeah they just love handing out pills. isn't it awful? i mean some people actually need them, don't get me wrong. but honestly, depression, anxiety and the like should never be treated with drugs unless absolutely necessary. and no one tell me that it usually IS, because it isn't. people just aren't willing to do the work themselves. psychotic disorders, that's different."

Anna G replied: "It's not unreasonable, exactly for the reasons you just noted - the prozac will take at least a month to kick into effect, and in the meantime, fast acting adderall can improve energy/motivation and get patients started on treatment (like going to therapy)."

verm money replied: "if you dont have ADD, then adderall is a perfect mood enhancer/motivational drug... it makes you feel great, which is why its so dangerous. if you do get adderall, use in moderation. or else you'll become like some people i know, taking 400-500 mg a day at least and not sleeping for days. that is when you turn into a zombie. but adderall taken in moderation is a life changing drug and just because a pre ion drug can be abused, doesn't mean that it can't help you and that you shouldn't give it a chance if the dr. prescribes it."

Jerome A replied: "Although serious or even prolonged depression really needs to be diagnosed by a trained and licensed psychiatrist or psychologist, there are a few home treatments for minor depression. My favorite is St. John's Wort, an herb that can be found in any supplement aisle. It can be taken as a pill or made into tea, and it is supposed to help your mood. I can't speak for most people, but I know I can feel the effects when I take it. Plus it's natural, which beats drugs any day."

What is the most succesful way of treating depression? Prozac doesn't work for me and it doesn't matter if I have a healthy diet, do more exercise or anything like that, it is there 24/7. What are some ways to get rid of it, even if they are extreme ways? Thanks

mary replied: "Change your life into making other people happy and that in turn could make you happy. Maybe homeless charities, or abandoned animals charities etc"

Sarah replied: "Do something fun, go paint balling or run a marathon, collect money for Charity's and do sponsored runs/walks, buy and xBox or get a new job, find ways of making yourself happy, natural ways of making yourself better always beat drugs! Try putting on a really nice outfit and going out with friends, spending time with other people often helps you forget about things that have happened in the past that may still be worrying you and getting you down."

Wednezday03 replied: "The most successful way is a multifaceted approach. Talk therapy/medicine/diet/exercise should be used in conjunction with each other. No one way will completely work. For me I have used therapy, medication, exercise, religion, journaling, art to alleviate my symptoms. Sometimes you have to try several medications before you find one that works best with your bodies chemistry or it may take a combination of medicines. It takes time to find the right combination of drugs and behaviors to combat depression. Good luck."

Bryan replied: "It is often the case that pills fail to treat the symptoms of depression over time. Though you may have tried different treatment techniques, what I think is lacking is the comprehensiveness of the treatment. It should be integrated into a whole. Getting different treatments at different places may not be of much help. Get professional help."

phillip b replied: "it is a good sign that you know ther are other ways of dealing with this what is paramount is to choose your healing route------ carefully-- be really aware that the conventional treatment for this can be horrendous and you can go on for years with no improvement and massive damaging detrimental side effects from meds . PROZAC FOR DEPRESSION? Hi, does anyone here have any experience of taking Prozac (Fluoxetine) to treat anxiety/depression. My main symptoms are 'unreal', 'disconnected' feelings, loss of appetite, tired all the time but broken sleep at night, loss of interest in activities ie work. The main problem for me is the unreal, dream like feeling i have, it scares me! Any info would be great :)

Keith G replied: "My Mum has been taking these for years and she has now gone a bit crazy. She thinks everyone is against her and always seems down. I think they should be banned."

Randolf replied: "i have that feeling too.. but i can manage it.. just mind over matter.. i know what you feel it's very scary.. avoid meds if possible.."

Vcky replied: "Have you been told by the doctor you have depression? You should not be taking anything without pre ion. This dream like/unreal feeling, why do you say this is a symptom of depression? I used to have it when I was younger, and it was due to a massive lack of sleep, I think you should focus on sorting out your sleep. Do you get enough exercise to tire yourself out during the day? It is a scary feeling indeed, you do need to get a proper nights sleep, obviously not just for one night but every night."

tiggle replied: "ive taken this before and found it very helpfull however for a couple of weeks after taking them i suffered headaches nothing major but it was a side effect and it wore off after a couple of weeks its true when they call it the sushine pill it really does lift ur depression but everyone is different and it may or maynot work 4 u its a matter of trial and error good luck xx"

wyomugs2k9 replied: "I have found Prozac to be helpful in the past, but I couldn't tolerate the side effects. Paxil works better for me."

Viken replied: "I have first hand experience with Fluoxetine, but I have to say it didn't work for me. It just gave me a false sense of happiness that came crashing down two hours after taking the pills, and i'm not gonna take them every 2 hours. If you are being perscriped the meds (and you shouldn't be taking them if you aren't) then give them a shot. Its really hard for doctors to perscribe medication for this because the effects are different on everyone. Its just a matter of trial and error. I have taken nearly every type of medication used to treat depression and still haven't found anything that works. They now belive thats just because I was in a locked in ward at the time so they are now re-trying everything while I am at home. If this doesn't work for you, there are heaps more options. Don't worry about it. Trust me, you haven't had the worst of it. I've been through hell with medication!"

L-Roy replied: "Ohh man thats terrible. I suggest if you can use it as just a jump start to get out of depression then thats cool. the last thing you need is to be dependent on prozac or any other drug."

ats02171 replied: "HI i have not used Prozac.(its kinda retro now), but i do know people that have used and they have described to me that same walking dream like state. If i were you i would keep taking it like the doc says and talk to him or her about it. Their could be a problem withe dosage maybe your getting to much. Or you might do better on another med or in conjunction with something else."

J G replied: "Meds should be a last resort for if it truly is depression caused by the brain not functioning correctly, as that is the only thing they will help. You need to address any other possible causes first. First off, sleep, and having a consistant sleep schedual has a big impact on mood. If you are inconsistant about when you go to bed, then try to be more consistant about that.....and get yourself into a routine to wind down in the evening, like turn down lighting as it gets later, maybe take a warm bath if that helps you. And if you still have very broken sleep, or a hard time falling asleep, try taking unisom or benedryl like a half hour before you go to bed. Isnt good to do all the time, but to do for a few nights to help get your body back into a proper sleep schedual works well. If you get yourself sleeping right and still feel tired all the time and a loss of appetite, it could be hypothyrodism, which your dr could do a blood test to screen you for. If that all is sorted out and you still feel like that, then maybe an anti depressant is right for you. Thing is, everyone reacts differently to different anti depressants. I'm on wellbutrin and love it......a friend of mine was on it and couldnt tolerate the side effects. If you talk to your dr they could start you on one, give it 6-8 weeks to see if it does help. And then if it doesnt help, or the side effects are not tolerable, then they could switch you to a different antidepressant, probably in another class. Antidepressants are not happy pills. They just make changes in the brain so that you can feel things normally. If they make you feel any way that is not normal, like a zombie or make you falsely happy, then that is a bad side effect and a sign that it is not the correct med for you. Also, these kinds of meds are best to stay on short term if possible, but many people DO need them long term, or even for the rest of their lives. Its not being addicted or dependant on them......its just that depression is an illness just as diabetes is and many people fail to realize that"

amy h replied: "im on prozac and i find that i get headaches and my appitie changes to i cant eat to cant stop myself eating i have restless sleep but not all the time. most of the effects go away when you have been on them for a while mate i tried to come off them because i thought they were making me ill but i wud rather have a little headache than feelin as depressed as i did."

Popsie replied: "Prozac has been known to cause bad side effects yet it hasn't been pulled, despite some negative results from research. Someone I know took it for years, then a new doctor took them right of it. It's a matter of opinion between doctors- some feel other alternatives should be taken, while some are sceptical about the whole negativity of the drug. It has come under fire with extreme circumstances about some people actually developing far more severe mental illness, such as paranoid schizophrenia. Drugs affect people in different ways, however the difference with Prozac, is that though many other users have no problems, there is still quite a lot with the side effects, more so than a lot of other drugs- after all that's why it's made the media over the years. You should never feel you have to put up with the side effects if there is another realistic alternative though, so best to speak to your doctor about other possible treatments- after all its their duty to make you feel better."

Crawford-24 replied: "Prozac (Fluoxetine) is a weird drug, i took it for my OCD and to help with my anxiety attacks. I noticed the first 2 doses you take, it multiplies your symptons at first so your body can get used to what your taking. After that some people may get side affects but most people feel much better after about 5-7 weeks, looking at your symptons that uve explained about you, ull be alright, if your not then just ask your GP for a weaker dose, good luck!!"

Zinnia replied: "Hi, I've been on Prozac since July for depression. Originally I was on 20mg then the dose was increased to 40. The side effects that I experienced with Prozac at some point or another are problems sleeping, vivid dreams when I could sleep, restlessness and dizziness. All of them have now gone totally or are less intense. Anti-depressants are very unique to the individual, just because one person responds one way to something doesnt mean that you will. What I would say it that if you do experience side effects, stick with the drugs as it will probably pass for you too. If they do not you can always go back to your dr and ask to be put on something else. I now take Mirtazapine on top of Prozac and have noticed a huge improvement in my mood. Now I can clearly see that Prozac alone is not helpful to me personally, but I hope it helps you :) Remember no anti-depressant is a "magic cure"-Ask your dr about counselling or therapies that are available. Good luck."

how does prozac treat hot flashes? I thought prozac was for treating depression. i am not depressed, so how is prozac going to treat my hot flashes & night sweats

Jack N replied: "Prozac is for depression and I seriously doubt if it's going to help hot flashes or night sweats. You will probably need HRT i.e. hormone replacement therapy."

i think i have social anxiety disorder. i take prozac for depression. does that treat social anxiety disorder? or would they prescribe an additional medicine to treat social anxiety? i think i have it because i'm really shy, i never know what to say, and i get nervous when i talk to people. i always feel anxious when i'm around people other than my family and best friend. *i'm over 20. too old for it to be a phase or from lack of experience in social situations.*

davelennv replied: "Yes, it does. I take Prozac 80 mgs daily, and it has completely changed me. I am a new person. I used to be introverted and shy, now I am neither. Now the downside, Prozac may not work for you in that aspect. They may have to add another medication, change the dosing, etc."

helenseward replied: "I took Prozac for a while and it made me extremely anxious and produced panic attacks. Coming off it was hard too. I would ask my doctor for a different type of medication, something to calm you down maybe. Don't worry too much about feeling shy, most of us do, some of us control it better than others thats all"

Is Clinical Depression and Major Depressive Disorder the same? Is Clinical Depression the same as Major Depressive Disorder?Or is it a different illness? Hi how is everyone? I am 21 years old and for the last 5 or so months i have been treated for clinical depression with Fluoxetine(Prozac). The dose was recently upped to 40mg by my GP in Glasgow.Thank you for reading.

Trevor replied: "Yes, it's the same."

Jonjune replied: "Hi Linda, Clinical depression suggests that your condition is physiological, ie brain chemical imbalance, rather than a reaction to events in your life and the way you are feeling about them. Fluoxetine wiill help with serotonin secretion in the brain and this will help you to cope and to feel more calm. The full effect is usually felt after 3-4 weeks. I hope that you have good support around you and people who will listen. Engaging with positive people and trying to help others in whatever ways you can wil help you too. Take care and best wishes, Jon"

Katlestrange replied: "Yes its the same i 16 and i have exactly the same as you apart from i had an allergic reaction to prozac blah blah blah you don't need to know. I've worked out that in england doctors tend to call it clinical rather than an major depressive disorder. i have no idea why but in america and places like that the tend to call it a major depressive disorder. If you ever need somebody to talk to I'm here don't be afraid to ask.Its easier to talk to somebody you don't know."

Is Clinical Depression the same as Major Depressive Disorder? Hi how is everyone. I am 21 years old and for the last 5 or so months i have been treated for clinical depression with Fluoxetine(Prozac). The dose was recently upped to 40mg by my GP in Glasgow. My question is is Clinical Depression the same as Major Depressive Disorder?Or is it a different illness? Thank you for reading.

Hugh D replied: "i think major depression and manic depression are both types of clinical depression."

ItsWittgensteinMiss replied: "Yes, Clinical Depression and Major Depressive Disorder are one and the same. Also sometimes called Major Depression, unipolar depression and unipolar disorder (although the last two names are rarely used)."

Dave replied: "yes they are. I asked the same question before. lol they absolutely are."

ramesh1938 replied: "My dear Linda, May God bless you. The clinical depression is same as major depression if the person feels isolated from the society and has very poor expression of his or her feelings. In your case, it may be possible for the drug to work and relieve your depression, but in reality, when we change some of our obsessive thoughts to more practical thoughts and combine it with a good life style of work, exercise and nourishment along with proper rest and recreation, it works the best for our recovery. Depression is not a permanent disease that can never be improved or cured. Please remember this. Ramesh."

What is the best treatment for depression? Prozac / Wellbutrin type pharmaceuticals loose their effectiveess. Pre ion amphetamines such as Adderall, used for treating ADD, help more. Has there been anything medically documented on treating depression in this manner?

ivillage4women replied: "According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), more than 80 percent of people with major depression can be treated successfully with psychotherapy, medical therapy or a combination of both. However, up to 50 percent may not respond to initial treatment. The treatment options available for major depression are quite varied and individualized. Mild forms of the disorder may respond well to psychotherapy alone, whereas moderate to severe forms typically require medication treatment (e.g., antidepressants). The outcome of treatment is generally best with a combination of psychotherapy and medication. During treatment, the patients mood will improve gradually, with the patient feeling a little better each day. There's lots more information on depression treatments below: "

2Beagles replied: "Talk to your doctor about this. It's possible you need to see a psychologist to help you deal with problems. A medical doctor can only prescribe medicine, so you may need to see both. Everyone is different. My son started off on anxiety meds and worked his way up to anti-psychotic. Scary stuff. Write down a list of what you've already taken, what works and what doesn't, and take it to your doctor. It could be as simple as switching meds. Good luck."

threeicys replied: "Your using depression in a general term. Their are several types of depression. People who have Manic Depressive episodes benefit from pre ions like Lamactile or other preventative meds for seizures. Often combined with an anti-depressant. Others may have mild depression and regular exercise can raise the serotonin to resolve the problem. Depression in someone with PTSD is treated always with psychiatric counceling first, then meds are concidered and monitored. Each case handled differently depending on the person. Usually people with ADD often have depression as well and are treated for both with combined meds. Adderall can cause some be "locked in the mood they woke up with for the whole day"since they often awake with depressive thoughts a mood stablizer is often necessary. Each person with depression is not like the next. Treatment is very individual. I don't have an exact answer, but I do know this, there needs to be a lot more study before we have affective and affordable mental health as a nation."

thefreevariable replied: "Antidepressants can lose their effectiveness, but not always. The most troublesome aspect of antidepressants is that they take so long to work and each one has a very different effectiveness on different people. As for amphetamines, I know a case where a patient with both depression and ADHD was given a new stimulant for the ADHD and it improved his depression. Unfortunately, while the medication's effect on ADHD persisted, the depression returned in full force within two weeks. So I'm not convinced that stimulants are the answer. Interestingly, that patient improved greatly on a dopamine agonist indicated for Parkinson's. The point is that there is not currently a "best" treatment; it's just whatever works best for the individual. And of course any pharmacological treatment can (and should, according to studies) be augmented by some form of therapy. This increases the effectiveness of the treatment overall."
