Has anyone had any weight loss with synthroid? Hi I was curious to know if anyone has dropped any pounds while on synthroid, I asked the doc if this medicine made me gain weight and she said all the opposite, I'm just worried b-cuz my friends husband was on thyroid medication and he was over weight and got even bigger when they placed him on medication for thyroids. Any imput would be helpful Thank you!

simplynxplicable@verizon.net replied: "I've been on Synthroid for the past year or so, but I've lost weight. But that could be because I made a consious effort to do so. If you remain sedentary there is a good possibility that you will gain weight. If you stay active and eat right you should be ok."

g i replied: "I have been on synthroid 200mcg for 7 yrs. Not only have I not lost but I have gain a ton of weight. My first tsh reading 7yrs ago was high at 31 but unbelievalbly 2 yrs ago I had it checked again while I was pregnant and on synthroid and it registered 1,500. My doctor ran it several times because it was so high and then I was sent to a major university for testing. The doctors there said my reading was the highest they had ever seen. I was diagnosed with several autoimmune disorders. I'm still on synthroid but the weight keeps going up."

mouses1 replied: "My daughter has this medical condition. My daughters medication has to be adjusted frequently she will gain/lose weight .I think it may depend upon what type of thyroid diease you have. My daughters hair will become drier, rough skin , loss of memory such as having to repeat to her twice about watching traffic, hot or cold such as hot flashes ,tiredness, and I have noticed depression at times when her medication is not regulated."

DNA replied: "You will not lose weight by thyroid medication alone. However, thyroid medication can stop you from gaining thyroid weight. Sounds like your friend's husband was either eating too much or he was not on enough thyroid medication. You need to test your thyroid in the morning only, for an afternoon test could get you put on less medication than you need. You also need to keep track of your thyroid levels, making sure your morning TSH stays below 2.0 if on Synthroid. If you are on Armour, then you'd need the FT4 midrange and FT3 high in range. Below are some thyroid links. Read up on hypothyroidism, as its power for you in getting the proper treatment"

Karen B replied: "I had very overactive thyroid. So I took the radioactive treatment to kill the thyroid which it did. So now, my thyroid is underactive and I am on synthroid but I am gaining weight because I don't think my thyroid level has come back up to where it should be. You probably should lose weight on the medication (unless you eat way too much food)."

butterflyspy replied: "I lost 50 pounds when I first went on it but then I thought aha eureka I can eat what I want now.So I stopped exercising and ate like a hoover and I gained it back.I mean I lived on takeout if that tell you anything. It works for weight loss but you cant compulsively over eat. That guy is probly overeating."

Talk to me. replied: "I have been on Synthroid for about two years now, and I also haven't lost any weight. I continue to work out and eat right. All you can do is start a good healthy workout, and keep active. Don't get upset though if you don't loose weight. I have only lost ten pounds and my sister, who does have a thyroid problem, has lost about three times as much as I have. Just start a healthly lifestyle and don't think about the thyroid."

anyone had weight loss on synthroid? Has anybody had weight loss with synthroid? If you had how drastic was the weight lost Like in a week or month. I ask b-cuz I have dropped 7 pound and today is my first week. I'm soo happy. Ever since I had my triplets almost 5 yrs ago, I have been on every diet you can think of and the weight would not come off, and now to my surprise 7 pounds yippi!!!!! I do ride bike every day for 30 min and try to go to the gym 3 x a week, but I also notice I have more energy with this pill and I hardly every think about eating. Your feed back would be appreciated!!!! Thank you

darealqueen replied: "It sounds like its what I need."

dolores h replied: "Usually the first week you will lose weight , and it can be as much as you have lost . But it will not always be that amount each week . You only want to lose around 2lbs a week ,and maintain a good healthy food plan . Do not look at it as a diet . It is a whole complete life change of eating habits .Refer to your food groups. Following that , believe me you will have plenty to eat ,drink lots of water .(unless you retain water , see your Dr.) I'm a Lifetime Member of weight Watchers ,have kept it off for years , no longer go to meetings ,its all about Maintenance, once you are where you want your weight to be . Most people don't understand you have to eat to lose weight , your Metabolism slows down if you don't , and too big of a weight lost you will just put it back on again . "I wish you the best ""

DNA replied: "Usually you do not lose weight on thyroid meds alone, however thyroid meds help so that you do not gain weight. It's most likely your diet and exercise that is causing the weight loss. Before you were on thyroid meds, the diet and exercise probably didn't help with weight loss because you were hypo, but now that you are on meds the diet & exercise helps. When one is hypothyroid, they usually gain weight or cannot lose weight. Once on meds, the weight gain stops. If they now diet and exercise they can lose weight easier than before the meds. However, if one does not diet and exercise, all the meds will do is stop the person from gaining. A rare few will lose weight just by going on thyoid meds, but that's not the norm"

Synthroid and weight loss? Ive been on sythroid for about 6 weeks now and i notice i lost about 9lbs.. Is this normal? Im eating the same and sleeping the same.. Also will i lose any more weight on it? Thanks..

slowtyper89109 replied: "That is normal. Your doctor will change your pre ion several times as he adjusts it to find the right dosage to give you a "normal" thyroid hormone level. He should have scheduled you for a series of blood tests over many weeks. Too much will make you lose weight. Too little and you will gain weight and become more aggressive and confrontational."

smartmom replied: "Is it time yet for you to go back and see your doctor to have that synthroid level checked? When you are first put on synthroid, you go back and have more bloodwork done after a few months. Maybe call for that appointment and mention that you are losing weight on the drug. But, once your blood levels are adjusted, you get it checked once a year. Your dosage may change with age. Making an appointment with an endocrinologist would be helpful. Leveling out your body's metabolism is their specialty. Will you lose more weight? Maybe, maybe not. What I do know is that your body is just trying to adjust to the new drug. But if you do continue to lose weight, that is a sure sign to phone the doctor. Good luck and take that pill every single solitary day. Don't freak out if you forget a day, but try to take it around the same time each day. Good luck."

PCOS, hyperthryoidism, metformin, synthroid and weight loss.? Hi, I am 19 years old and was diagnosed with PCOS a little more than a year ago. The doctor prescribed me 1 1/2 pills of metformin 2X a day. I am unsure, but I think each pill is 500mg so that would be 1500mg a day. Within the first month of taking metformin, I lost 20lbs. This was a great relief to me as I was 168lbs and it was reduced to 148lbs! Then about a month later, I was also diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I had also transferred to a new doctor and around the same time, my pre ion for metformin [which I had only been taking for about a month] and he said he would prescribe me the metformin after I had been cured from hyperthryoidism. Now, almost a year later, my thyroid levels have been normal with the help of the radioactive iodine treatment. But the thing is, by stopping the metformin, I think the PCOS still caused me to gain weight as now I have not only gained the 20lbs I lost back, but I have gained an additional 17lbs, making me 185lbs! While I had hyperthryoidism, I wasn't allowed to exercise at all, not even walk up the stairs to get to my 3rd floor classes so I don't know if that's what made me gain weight again or if it was just the PCOS. Do you think I will lose the 20lbs per month again and how much weight should I lose total with the help of the metformin? I will also be prescribed synthetic thyroid hormones which is also known to help people with hypothryoidism lose weight [I will be permanently hypothroid forever with the treatment]. Do you think that I will be able to lose all my excess weight to my normal range of around 125lbs? Because being overweight is not looked upon kindly in my culture [Chinese] and it has impacted me a lot especially when I eat very healthy [almost vegetarian] and still work out for an hour a day [now that I am able to again] and walk to all my college classes from my dorm [which takes about 10min to and 10min back]. Thank you!! Oh and to add, I have been seeing an Endocrinologist since I was first diagnosed with PCOS. Then when I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, I had to transfer to another Endocrinologist because I moved.

Randy W replied: "First off let me say that you have quite a little bit to deal with. The PCOS is in now way affecting you weight unless it had become a tumor. The pre ion for metformin is giving for helping regulate blood sugars in Diabetics. Now the issue here is that Synthoid is a medication that could cause weight gain. And if you are type 2 Diabetic and your not taking metformin you would be gaining weight from excess sugars that you body is storing as fat because your body doesn't know how to deal with it. I would suggest going to an Internal Medicine Doctor, or Even an Endocrinologist. These two type of doctors are going to be able to give you the best answer for what is going on. And I wouldn't wait, Make the call as soon as possible because it's hard to get into a Endocrinologist, usually 2-3 months. In the mean time I would suggest a 1500 calorie a day diet, no caffinated drinks, No Breads or Starches. Keep a daily record of you food intake and exercise and take this to the new Doctor."

DNA replied: "So you are now hypothyroid? Both hypothyroidism and PCOS cause weight gain and make it difficult to lose weight. You most likely gained because you are now hypothyroid and also because your glucose and insulin levels are higher without the Metformin. I have both conditions, so I know exactly what you are going through. Both conditions have to be in check or weight gain will happen. First, you need to have the first thing in the morning TSH be around 1.0. Also, you need to keep your insulin and glucose levels down by exercising, diet, and perhaps Metformin. Synthroid will not help you lose weight. It will just make it easier for you to lose with diet and exercise providing your TSH in the morning stays round 1.0 and you are converting T4 into T3. Can Synthroid be used for weight loss? I'm 210lbs, 5'4" and I'm desperate! What mg is safe for me to use? I took Synthroid about 10 years ago, and I lost a substancial amount of weight! I just can't remember the mg I was given, though. I need to have enough "get up and go" to get my exercise jump started... Has anyone ever used Synthroid or any other thyroid replacement? What were the results?

deflatedme replied: "do you work out? people use t3 aka synthroid to help them lose weight. not only will it cause you to lose fat, but also muscle. people start at 25 mg for 3 days, and work their way up to 50 or 75 per day for about 3 weeks. ramping up and then down. sounds to me like you need to try other things first. You can possibly mess up your thyroid or have your hair fall out if you arent careful."

pooterilgatto replied: "Sythroid is a RX drug for low thyroid hormone. It is not meant to be used for weight loss. But to bring your thyroid function back to normal levels. If you have a low Thyroid, get to your Doctor and have aTSH blood test done. If needed the Doctor will prescribe the Synthroid and in the correct dosage. Why would you have stopped taking Synthroid 10 Years ago, Once you are diagnosed with with low thyroid you should be on Synthroid for the rest of your life. I would suggest you get to your Doctor ASAP and have this taken care of. And this time stay on Synthroin or Levothroxin for the rest of your days."

Stuff Buster replied: "If you are serious about losing the weight you need to take responsibility for losing it rather than depending on some or other drug to help. Taking drugs to lose weight does not change your mental picture of yourself... it does not change how you feel about yourself. Rather decide to take personal responsibility and do something constructive. If you need extra help to find out why you have put on all this weight you could try energy therapy. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a great therapy to help people with weight issues and is totally drug free. You can also learn how to do it yourself so you don't have to keep going to a therapist. You can find out more from the web sites below. Good luck with getting back on track and helping yourself."

Kristina d replied: "you cannot get synthroid without a pre ion. and it is dangerous to take without a blood test to determine if or what you are laking. you can deplete your bone calcium. Read the glycemic index it will help you understand food I also used Well Bet X with mullberry (a type of fiber that takes up so much space you can't eat- no hype stuff in it-it's cheaper on line"

Pete replied: "Hello, I answered this question on the other post on this same thread. You did not mention in it that you were given the drug before, was it by a physician? if so what was the reason it was prescribed? Do you have low thyrodism? If you do you need to see a physician again, immediately and get an evaluation, there are many other complications if you have low thyrodism other than weigh gain that could be potentially life threatening. If however some doctor prescribed the pills as a weight loss alternative that would be a very rash thing to do, or if you obtained them by other means, such as purchase from Mexico etc and used them with out them being prescribed. In other words, do not take synthyroid or any other thyroid replacement hormone unless you have a thyroid condition and in that case follow the recommendations of your physician as to the strength of the drug and frequency and period of use."

no_frills replied: "When you use synthroid and have a healthy thyroid. You will become hyperthyroid, and your body will signal to your thyroid to produce less hormones. This may be the problem you are now experiencing from your previous use. Synthroid is a synthetic version of thyroid hormones that controls your metabolism. I am on thyroid medication, and when my dose is too high I will have heart palpations, anxiety, increased appetite, and trouble sleeping which leads to fatigue. It does not jump start me, being at a higher dose than I need to be. The first time my dose was too high I lost 10 lbs in a month with anxiety attacks, next time it occurred I had no weight loss at all but had all the other symptoms. You should have a thyroid test and see if you need to take thyroid medication. The amount that is safe to use can only be determined by blood tests."

jodi replied: "if you took synthyroid you must have a thyroid problem, go back to your doctor and have your blood tested. if you are having trouble losing this my be your problem. Try a cleansing diet! I did and lost 11 pounds and 21 inches in only 9 days. I was very happy with the results and continued on the program and lost 29 pounds in 5 weeks. This is the fastest I have ever lost with other diets like Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Medifast, Slimfast etc. Cleansing works by removing impurities from your body. You get impurities from your food (pesticides, preservatives, food additives, colorings) water, chemicals, pollution, medications, alcohol, hormones that the animals you eat were fed etc.YUCK! The impurites get coated with fat and remain in your body. To remove the fat, you have to remove the impurites. This system worked for me, maybe it can work for you too. You can check out the website or call this toll free number 1-877-587-4647 for more info. The program is not cheap, but it is worth every penny since it works and keeps you motivated. Good luck! Synthroid and weight gain/loss? Many months ago i was 167 and all muscle then the nurse put me on synthroid and i lost 32 pounds and i hated it. Now i guess they increased my dosage, because its 125 now and it says something elese different on the bottle. It says drink plenty of water. Why do you have to drink plenty of water while taking synthroid? And will it help me gain my weight back again? I never needed to loose any weight my whole life because i've always been skinny except 3 or 4 years ago when i was 182 pounds of muscle. I'm not worried about getting fat because that's impossible for my body type because i have lean muscle at 137 pounds.

star replied: "Taking Synthroid interfers with your thyriod. which changes with your thyroid can effect your body as far as weight gain or weight loss."

Paul Ding replied: "If you think you're getting the wrong dose of synthroid (Levothyroxine), you are probably right. Levothyroxine has a narrow therapeutic index. Regardless of the indication for use, careful dosage titration is necessary to avoid the consequences of over- or under-treatment. These consequences include, among others, effects on growth and development, cardiovascular function, bone metabolism, reproductive function, cognitive function, emotional state, gastrointestinal function, and on glucose and lipid metabolism. Many drugs interact with levothyroxine sodium necessitating adjustments in dosing to maintain therapeutic response. If you don't stay hydrated when taking synthroid, that increases the concentration in your blood, and you're overdosing. No ethical doctor would put anyone on synthroid in order to help them lose weight. Many people taking synthroid, in fact, are stereotypically fat Type 2 diabetics. It's pretty easy for them to lose weight - all they have to do is stop taking their insulin. Of course, that can lead to ketoacidosis, which is too often fatal, but if you expect to be slim and healthy at that same time, that's asking a bit much!"
