How do you get your baby to take Zantac (Ranitidine) for reflux? My 4 month old was put on Zantac for reflux. We gave him his first dose this morning, and he spit it all out. I gave it to him from a syringe, in his cereal, and mixed with juice in a bottle...he would not swallow any of it. Any suggestions on how to get him to take it? Thanks! It is not pills, it is liquid.

NISSI replied: "Crush it, then put it in applesauce. Applesauce usually hides the medications."

Tausha L replied: "Try putting it in something thick so he wont tast it. and dont let him see you putting it in it cause they do pay attention to what your doing.Have you tried his formula that is thick and he might not know its in there"

ericakamp19 replied: "We had the same problem at first..now he opens his mouth and lets us put it in. Yup, we use the syringe...did you try putting in a little at a time in his inner cheek and switching sides...then lightly pinch his nose and he should swallow..he'll get use to it! (he will spit it out at first.)"

I'd rather be at the beach replied: "It tastes horrible! Have you tried it? For some weird reason, it's very minty. It's going to sound harsh, but we would just take the syringe and squirt the medicine into our son's cheek, then close his month (push his chin up). He would swallow it, and after a while he just got used to it. I would do this before a feeding, so right after he got his medicine I would nurse him (so he could get the taste out of his mouth!)"

God Bless our Troops! replied: "If my daughter did that, I would put it in bottle with a bit of formula or breastmilk and shake it up and give it to her. They also have these things that you give them medicine with, they have a nipple on the top and you put the medicine in the bottom... I dont remember what they are called. You can buy them at walmart or walgreens. You give it to them just like a bottle and they suck it right out."

My 4 month old was just diagnosed with reflux and prescribed Zantac? My 4 month old was recently diagnosed with reflux and prescribed zantac. I have not given it to her yet because the reflux does not bother her at all, she spits up all day and it doesn't phase her! Will the zantac decrease her spitting up or just stop it from burning her which it clearly doesn't!

Mother of Twins replied: "Both my girls were on Zantac until they turned a year old and yes, in my opinion, I think you should give it to her. It may not phase her, but I am sure that you are tired of cleaning up the mess all day :-). My girls eventually grew out of it and now they are reflux free!"

mamakatie replied: "My 4 month old is on Zantac and it does greatly reduce the spit up and therefore the buring too! I hav etried taking him off of it and I can really tell the difference! If your insureance pays for it I'd give it to your babe... it is pretty benign stuff!"

Rebecca D replied: "it help with both..i have a 5 month old and she was on zantac from 1 1/2 months -4 months....she would spit up like crazy but once she got the med it helped out a lot and it helped w her colic .so i recomend u use it 2"

Jennifer C replied: "My son has bad reflux also. He is on Previcid though, not Zantac. it helps him a great deal. He had some much acid, the milk he was spitting up was coming up curdled. I would give it to her, you will see a difference."

How long should i take zantac for acid reflux? I suffer from acid reflux and to treat it i take maximum strength zantac 150 mg. I want to know how long i should be taking zantac and if it will eventually cure me of my acid reflux? Also because of the acid reflux my voice sounds very muffled and it makes it hard for people to understand me when i speak will my voice ever go back to normal or is the damage from the acid already done? I have been suffering from acid reflux since i was 18 and now i'm 27.

doc replied: "reflux is a long standing problem . however the symptoms will disappear in next 4-8 weeks . but you have to adhere to anti reflux measure throughout your life and some time we have to give antacids even life long have you had a upper g i endoscopy done and what was the result"

Joe B. replied: "I have it too and Zantac is not going to cure your acid reflux. I do take it sometimes in a pinch, but it's like putting a band-aid on a bad wound. You need to see a doc and get proper treatment. It's only going to get worse. I'm on Prevacid 30mg and it works great."

MattS replied: "Ryan: I can't answer your question like a pro because I'm not a physician, but I do know that many reports say that that you shouldn't take acid reflux medication for longer than one or two months. But I had the same problem and took bottles and bottles of medication and although they helped some, I still had acid reflux at times. I'd be up at night trying to get relief. Right after a meal, I was suffering. I was miserable. Although this lasted for like 10 years, the last three was the worst and that's when I started pre ion medications. Then I read about how most are only supposed to be prescribed for 2 weeks and thought, uh oh. Because I hate taking medicine and because I thought the meds can't be that good for my system, plus, they barely helped, I started to look for a natural way to treat/cure my acid reflux. I tried one and it really worked. I haven't taken pre ion meds for acid reflux in like 12 months! Plus, I only did the natural treatment for like 7 days and then as needed after that. In the last 8 months, I've used it maybe twice! It really worked for me. I'm 36 years old now. I know there are a lot of scammy stuff out there, but this one really and truly worked for me. I don't know if your interested in approaching your acid reflux naturally, but if you are, I added a link to the website that tells about it. Plus, I added the link about zantac too. Hope this helps and good luck man. MattS"

For parents of reflux babies that take zantac? My son is 3 months old and takes zantac for his reflux. He is a silent refluxer so that is "fun". The zantac seems to help him but lately he has become very fussy and the medicine isn't working as well. My doctor said that the medicine will need to be adjusted as his weight increases and I think that is our problem. Does anyone know what the dose for a 12 pound baby is? He is currently taking 1ml. Thanks in advance.

Miss Scarlett in the Library replied: "Each baby is different. Talk to your doctor again and find out how much they want to up his dosage. My 3 month old nephew recently had his doubled by his pediatrician, and they said it will probably increase again once he hits 6 months."

valentine replied: "My daughter had reflux but gaviscon infant ended up being better than zantac. They come in powder sachets , easier to add to the bottle or give on a spoon diluted in a bit of water. However i wouldn't guess or take advice from anyone but a doctor regarding dosage for the Zantac incase they're wrong. Also my daughter is now 13 month old and has now been diagnosed as Coeliac and lactose intolerant so that is why she couldnt keep her milk down and had constant diarrohea from 6 months , so keep an eye out for any further symptoms as he gets older."

maria s replied: "Is your baby on breastmilk or formula? I am also concerned that my 1 month old preemie has acid reflux. But my ped said it is normal since they are still getting their internals developed. One of the best things I did to help her is to watch my diet since I breastfeed her. I avoid chocolate, caffeine, spicy foods, high vitamin c concentrated foods, wheat. All the stuff I love but a little sacrifice is worth it instead of relying on medication. If your baby is on formula, keeping his/her head up while feeding, waiting 20-30 minutes before laying her down & burping every 2-3 ounces of milk taken can help."

Jennifer B replied: "My daughter had this too and our doctor increased it by .5 mils...I am not telling you this is what you should do and I am by no means a doctor. I am only telling you what my docotr did"

Was your baby put on zantac for acid reflux? My 1 month is being given Zantac for her acid reflux. Just wondering how well/fast it worked for your baby? My doctor said it could take up to two weeks to really have an effect, which sucks. Did you use anything else with it that worked as well?

Jill P replied: "My son was diagnosed with reflux around 6 weeks, and was given Zantac. We waited 2 weeks for it to take effect, but it was only effective in reducing his symptoms by about 50-75%, so at his 2 month well visit they took him off Zantac and put him on Prevacid, which worked great (and tasted much better to him!). Around 6 1/2 months we took him off the Prevacid to see how he would do and he was fine. He is now 8 months and completely symptom-free."

Mandy replied: "I am so sorry to hear that your ds has to go through this. My ds was diagnosed at 7 weeks after weeks of me trying to find a dr. that knew anything. They put him on prevacid 7.5 mg per day and increased that 4 weeks later to 15 mg. per day. I didn't think dr's prescribed zantac for infants anymore. Most Dr's. prescribe prevacid. It took 2 weeks to help ease his pain and 4 more weeks to completely cure his gut wrenching screams but he is a totally different baby now and has been for 8 months. Infant reflux is a hard thing to go through with your baby especially when others don't understand it. I have found MUCH help at - a wonderful sight full of information from moms that experience the same thing with their infant. Good luck."

Cam's Mommy replied: "My son was put on Axid at about three weeks old. We tried everything before that and nothing helped...he screamed miserably and arched his back every time he ate, and every time he spit up he'd cry. It took maybe 2-3 days to start working, and the difference was night and day. He's four months old now and we haven't had to increase his dosage, so the doctor said after this bottle runs out we can let it go and see if he's outgrown it."

Has anyone given their baby zantac syrup for reflux & found it keeps them awake? My baby son was prescribed zantac syrup - 1ml per day to treat reflux but I've noticed that he's now waking every 3 hours when he used to sometimes sleep at night up to 6 hours straight. He's 9 weeks old so wondered if it could be the zantac?

mommy2dw replied: "My daughter has been taking zantac now for about 7 wks..but hers isnt syrup...it is a pill that i dissolve in 5ml of water...it is like a drink..she usually sleeps wonderfully after taking it. Im not sure if it is the zantac, but between 7-10 wks, that is a major growth spurt time for babies...Is he eating everytime he wakes up? or is he just waking up fussy? I would watch what he does..and then maybe ask for a different reflux med, if it persists after the growth spurt time. Good luck!"

Catmom replied: "I wish I could help. I didn't even know they have zantac for babies. I learn something new every day. Maybe, check their product web-site. This link shows a side effect can be severe headaches. Is she showing signs of this? The link also talks about phenylalanine being in their product. I believe that is aspartame and I know that aggravates my stomach. You can check her dose on there also."

Lauren S replied: "Yes, my daughter took it from 1 month to 6 months and it never kept her fully awake but she tossed and turned all night. She always seemed very uncomfortable. I wasn't sure if it was the medecine or if the reflux was still bothering her. I have had her off of it for one month now(she's 7 months) and she sleeps 10-12 hours solid at night. I was told at 3 months to start thickening the bottles with rice and that helped some. I hope your son grows out of it a lot sooner than my daughter. The spitting up got really annoying!"

Babies with acid reflux using zantac? My baby was put on zantac at 5 weeks old for his silent Reflux. When can i take him off of it. He is now 14 weeks old and a lot better. Has anyone else had to have their baby on zantac? And when did they stop using it?

Fetal And Weeping replied: "My son had to stay on it until he was 8 months old. His doctor went through all of the other options before putting him on it, but it made a world of difference. We have a wonderful pediatrician who would call to check up on him every now and then, and I didn't stop giving it until we had discussed it. I hated seeing the poor guy in pain, and she knew I didn't want him on meds, so she kept check on him. Call your pediatrician and ask their opinion. Sometimes the only reason they're doing better is because of the meds."

pelicipod replied: "My daughter was put on it at about the same age. She is now 13 weeks and she is still on it. When I talked to the doc she said she was going to start gradually reducing the amount she is given so she could be weened off of it by a year. If it is working I wouldn't stop using it yet. I think weening would be the best option."

How do I get my 5-week baby to take his Zantac for his reflux? The Zantac tastes really awful even after the pharmacist flavored it with grape flavoring. My baby cries when I administer the medicine and I can't imagine doing this 3 times a day for the next 4-6 months!

Lindsey G replied: "i have a one month old son who is on that and he seems to take it pretty well. i gently pull his chin down with one finger and give it with the other hand. make sure that your babys head is back a tilted back a little bit. i hope i helped a little bit. good luck"

April S replied: "well put the meds in a bottle with his formula but only about an ounce and then they should never know the difference but do this around feeding time and have another bottle ready to substitute when the other is gone good luck"

marilyn replied: "TRY TO MIX IT WITH SOME ORANGE JUICE OR WATER BUT FIRST ASK YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU CAN DO, ANYWAY YOU MUST GIVE IT EVEN IF HE CRIES A LOT IS FOR ITS OWN GOOD AND HEALTH, THAT WHAT YOU SHOULD THINK OF EVERY TIME YOU GIVE IT."

Lisa replied: "Did you try a soy based formula (assuming you don't breast feed). 2 out of my 3 children had a big problem with milk based formula so I switched and within a week I noticed a huge difference with their acid reflux problems. Ask your pediatrician."

allmightyjaz replied: "I wouldn't mix it with his/her formula. If it makes the formula taste nasty it may affect how the baby eats all day. I used to do this, use the syringe type of measurer, fill it to correct amount, while baby is eating sneak it in the side of the cheek, gently squeeze in till it is all gone. Then baby doesn't even realize they are getting it.This works if you are nursing too! I did it while I nursed."

angela m replied: "Hi, i also have to give my 10 week old son zantac ever since 4 weeks of age. At first it was IMPOSSIBLE, what i did get into his mouth he would spit out again. I rang the peadiatrician and also the chemist and also my local doctor and its perfectly safe to add it to their formula, which i do. First make up a bottle with about 30mls in it and add zantac to this, to make sure they get full amount, then give them the rest of their bottle . Goodluck :)"

Gladys C replied: "the baby cries because it burns as it goes down. my little girl had this and didn't outgrow it til she was 21months. try putting the zantac in just a small amount of his formula. also they had my little girl on riglin at the same time she had no trouble with it she would smack her lips because it tasted good. i would always give her the zantac then immediately give the riglin to soothe it as it went down. you may also want to have you a bottle of mylecon drops at hand because babys with reflux tend to get the collic. and they cry alot with it. but mylecon drops are a God send to baby and mom it eases that pain for them quick and they can rest. ( i know it burns because i told her pediatrician that she would cry everytime i gave it to her and it smells so strong. the doctor told me its because it burns you try some i did and it does but they have to have it.) so i would put hers in a small amount of formula she would have to be able to take it all. my little girl had it real bad she would take less than half of a half ounce and she would projectile from one side of the room to the other. and it would be like she had taken 2 full 8 ounce bottles. she got phenumonia, from the vomiting and had to have a heart moniter and breathing treatments every 4 hours. she was our 3rd child at first the baby doctor she first saw told me there was nothing wrong with her she was gaining weight take her home i left straight from his office and took her to the hospital they did some tests said she was allergic to iron and changed her formula i waited a 2 days for that formula to help and she started wheezing so i took her to a different baby doctor and found out that it was reflux and she was hospilized that day over phenumia and to treat the reflux. she ended up on nutramigen because its mostly digested and a tablespoon of rice cereal to each ounce. good luck and best wishes, hope your little one outgrows this soon. they have advanced in the time when my litttle girl was a baby shes 14 now. i have also heard of mothers switching to goats milk help/cure reflux . i even tried to change and breast-feed it didn't help her but i have heard of these things helping others."

Evin replied: "We had the same problem. First of all, who was the GENIUS who thought MINT was a good flavor base for an infant??? What a dope, huh? And the grape only barely covers that flavor up. Ick, ick, ick! After some trial and error and asking my doc and pharmacist if this was ok, I found something that worked for us. I would get the Zantac as is, mint flavor, no grape. I'd pull up the correct dosage into the syringe and then pull up as much apple juice into the syringe as it could hold. The apple juice diluted the Zantac and was more palatable for the baby. Also aim the syringe into the back of baby's cheek and release it slowly, going in 2 or 3 tries (rather than all at once). Another option is to see if there is a compounding pharmacy in your area. At the compounding pharm, they make the med from scratch and can leave out the mint & only add the flavoring you want. Hope that helps & good luck :) Note for Allison R: Infant reflux is actually different from adult reflux. Infant reflux is due to the esophagus being immature and usually is resolved by 6 months. Adult reflux is caused by abnormalities in the lower esophageal sphincter, esophageal hernias, esophageal contractions or stomach distension (overeating). Occasionally it is caused by too much stomach acid. I would caution against giving an infant a soda compound. It will likely lead to MORE spitting up and the sodium is really bad for their immature kidneys. Just FYI :)"

My son was put on Zantac for his reflux, the PED said it would take a good 3-4 days to really work? What worked for ur child with reflux ? And how long did it take to work? Also myson is only 3 weeks old.

Denise G replied: "We put our son on it at 3 months and it worked after the first dose! Which is extremely rare. We were lucky. My pediatrician told us it can take up to 2 weeks to see a change. Give it some time. And be sure to still handle your baby like a "carbonated beverage" after he eats."

mrs.mummy replied: "mine was put on it for 8 weeks and it never worked - turns out she had a milk allergy and thats why she screamed and arched her back and always threw up...but the doctor said it can take up to 2 weeks for the zantac to work properly for a reflux baby x"

JB's Mom replied: "3-4 days seems too long. Think about how long it takes for an adult who takes zantac...a few hours. Maybe he was factoring in the sleep adjustment for your LO."

Anyone had a baby that took Zantac for reflux? How long did it take to work? He's been on it a few days now & no improvement! Any suggestions?

lil C replied: "My baby is taking it . We had to switch formula from Similac Advance to Enfamil Added Rice (AR). Make sure baby is upright during and after a feeding. It worked like a charm"

imthemeek replied: "They put my daughter on acid reflux medicine and it didn't help at all. She threw up more. We started giving her an over the counter baby drops and she was much better. Unfortunately, that was 6 years ago so I can't remember the name. I would go to the local pharmacy and ask. It was a baby's liquid drops."

Emma's Mommy replied: "It never worked for my daughter, it just made her throw up more."

muskan replied: "No improvement for my 3 months old baby after using the zantac.Put ur baby in upright position and try o burp after every ounce. This works well.ask ur ped and tell abt the no improvement."

mrsswaggtastic replied: "My son has short gut syndrome and he takes omeparzole for his acid reflux and it works wonders for him."

island girl replied: "mine took it, and it started working about 1week. He is now taking axid for it because his doc said zantac is very weight sensitive and as he got older the pain returned. With axid we didn't have to increase the dosage so often and he has no pain. I also had to change his formula to similac alimentum. It doesn't make them not throw up, it stops the acid from burning them when they do throw up. They will continue to throw up but will not be hurting."

miss_maz4 replied: "my baby is a heart baby and has alot of reflux. it took a few different reflux products to control it, try cow and gates carobel instant or gaviscon for infants is fantastic. if the Zantac hasnt worked yet it obviously doesnt suit him, as it should work straight away."
