Taking Nifedipine for pre-term labor? I am 21 weeks pregnant and was just put on Nifedipine to hopefully stop pre-term labor. Anyone else in the same situation? What is the success rate on the drug working? I am so scared... I'm already high risk... Incompetent Cervix (they stitched my cervix closed at 13 weeks, so that's taken care of) I also have a blood clotting disorder, so I'm on Lovenox for that. I have enough to worry about and now this. If anyone has any input or experienced pre-term labor, please reply. I do not/didn't have any cramping or feel any contractions, so I'm hoping it's minor and that the Dr caught it at an early stage. Please help

"Your doctor knows you best, trust them ^^ if you need any support or just info, look it up on google. If you are that worried though, just talk to your doctor and ask them these questions, and ask what you can do in every day life to help avoid preterm labor. hope this helps <3"

mommytobe2008 replied: "I am also having preterm labor, and am on bedrest. I didn't have an incompetent cervix, but started having contractions at 24 weeks. I did a lot of research, and from what I read, it seems like as long as you are stitched closed, and are resting as much as possible, you should be fine, as long as you are not having contractions. The doctor was more worried about the contractions with me. I had thought they were just Braxton-Hicks, but I started getting more than 4 an hour, and talked to the doctor, and found out they were painless labor contractions. They put me on bedrest, and told me as long as my cervix doesn't dialate early, I should be fine. I am now at 32 weeks, and haven't dialated yet. I didn't take the same meds you are on, but I was taking Ibuprofen until last week, and Vistarol now, but my meds are to stop contractions. Good luck with your little one! I'm sure you will be fine. You need to call your doctor if you have any of the following though: 1) lower back pain that doesn't go away if you lie down 2) intense pressure in the vaginal area, not just in the abdomen 3) cramps 4) more than 4 contractions an hour, even if they don't hurt Hope that helped. It's tough having to worry about having your baby too early...I know! I thank God every day that my little girl is not born yet, and that she will stay in there for another 4 weeks. EDIT: I just wanted to add that my doctor just put me on Nifedipine yesterday. I was still having contractions with my other meds. If you want more info, check out this website:"

has anyone taken procardia (nifedipine) to stop contractions in pre-term labor? My question is this: I don't feel my contractions. I only know that I ajm having them because my belly gets literally rock hard. I'm on procardia, but still get rock hard belly between doses. Anyone else experience this? I have GOT to keep these twins in for 4-5 more weeks I'm just shy of 30 weeks (YAY!!), and was put on procardia 5 days ago.. first at 6 hour intervals for 48 hours, then on the regular dose of 1-2 per day. Also, got 2 shots of betamethasone ( 24 hours apart) to develop the twins' lungs because I am 40% thinned and 1+ dilated as of last Wednesday. Am on strict bedrest as well. That's why I don't understand the contraction thing.. because I'm not doing anything that would cause a contraction in the first place. So, idk if it's BH or not.

~Give me a break!!~ replied: "Well you'll still feel the the tightening of the BH's contractions. Just take it very easy for the next month to keep the Little sweetie's in!!! Good luck & Congrat's!!!!!"

Jill replied: "How often are you getting the contractions? You should go to the hospital if you have more than 6 in one hour for more than an hour. But call your doctor anytime you are not sure about things. Always err on the side of caution. How many weeks are you? Has your cervix changed if they have checked? Other than resting, keeping yourself hydrated may help. Even if you feel like you're drinking a ton already, and I know it doesn't make things easy with trips to the bathroom, but plenty of hydration lessens uterine irritability. Good luck to you, hang in there! **ETA: If the contractions last less than 45 seconds they are more likely to be BH, while "true" contractions are usually longer. But if you've been put on bedrest and are taking meds, etc., don't worry so much about the length of each, use the "6 in an hour" rule to guide your actions. And at 30 weeks, even with twins, you are in a good place. Sure, the babies would need time in NICU, but survival rates are well above 95% by 30 weeks. So take a deep breath and relax a bit! :)"

ME replied: "Make sure to let your Dr. know that you are still getting contractions... I took procardia, but I didn't get any contractions while I was on it.... Your Dr. may up your dose, or add somthing else. Good luck!"

How long can early labor last? At 32 weeks, I went into pre-term labor, was 95% effaced, 1.5cm dilated and my contractions where 2 minutes apart. They put me on terbutaline and magnesium sulfate. In 4 days my contractions slowed and where not causing me to dilate further. I spent 2 weeks in the hospital having anywhere from 6-25 contractions/hour. I was sent home for the next 2 weeks on strict bed rest was taking nifedipine/terbutaline pills to control the ongoing contractions. At week 36, the doctor said I could go off bed rest, and quit the meds at which time my contractions went from a pain scale of 1-3 to 2-5 and are causing a tremendous amount of stress on my back. At my doctors app, they confirmed I had not progressed from 1.5cm and told me that the earliest they could induce was 39 weeks. At this time I am 36 weeks/6 days and I am growing weary. Should I go back on the nifedipine? Why are my stronger contractions not doing anything? I dont think i can go another 2 weeks in early labor.

Melissa K replied: "One of my friends was having contractions for weeks! It sucks your doc won't induce. But, ask him if he will do it if you'll concent to either an amnio (to check for lung maturity) or do the corticosteriod shot to mature the lungs. I had my baby at 33 1/2 weeks and after I had the shots (2 of them), my daughter's lungs were perfect."
