Anybody lose a substancial amount of weight on Metformin? I am supposed to start Metformin for PCOS tomorrow. I need to lose about 80lbs, and I was wondering if anyone had lost a substancial amount of weight taking this drug. I do Aerobics and Kickboxing 4 days a week, and walk 4 miles 5 days a week, and have only managed to lose 3 pounds.
Also, I know the side effects are bad. Is there any medication or anything else anyone did to help curb the side effects?
Thanks!
Goodtoknow replied: "I am taking Metformin for PCOS. Along with diet changes and increased exercise I have lost about 25 lbs. over time. My doctor prescribed the extended release version which is said to be easier on the stomach. I just made sure I drank lots of fluids and took it with meals.
I did have stomach upset and loose stools for about the first week or so but now its not like I'm even taking anything.
I just have to say...and its really gross...you may see what looks like the pill (in a whole form) in your stool. This worried me because I thought my body wasnt absorbing it. The part that comes out in your stool is just the carrier for the medication. You body does absorb it."
Niki M replied: "I have been taking metformin for PCOS for the last year. I have had no side effects (other than a regular period for the first time in my life) and have had no weight loss. I was told that it was supposed to help me lose weight, but it didn't. I am now taking Adipex to (hopefully) help me lose. I wish you luck!"
bopdoobie replied: "I was taking metformin for pcos, but I didn't notice any side affects and I did not lose any weight, I actually gained, I am not taking it at the moment and I have already lost weight."
Has anyone had any miracles with losing weight on Metformin? Has anyone had any miracles with losing weight on Metformin?
I received it for insulin resistance, and my doc said that I may lose some weight while taking it because it will make me feel better. I have had less craving for sweets while on it, and seem to be full quicker.
mdw8164 replied: "I was on it for 3-4 months as part of my fertility treatments and I didn't lose any weight."
Kristi H replied: "I have lost 30lbs in 2 months using Metformin and the Insulin Resistance diet. I think the diet change is what did it more than the Metformin, honestly. Check out the book about the insulin resistance diet."
Should I have lost weight on Metformin after 2 months? I am taking Metformin 1000mg at bedtime, for 2 months, and I have not lost a single pound. My doctor put me on so that I could get my periods started, and lose weight before getting pregnant. I got the periods, but no weight loss. I am 31, and I am not diabetic, but my insulin levels we a little high. Any thoughts?
Is weight gain or weight loss an effect of Metformin? I was told by my endocrinologist that since I'm insulin resistant and excess insulin makes you retain weight, that metformin will help my metabolism or whatever be normal so that I can lose weight like a normal person. However, I've also read that weight gain is a side effect of metformin. Which is it?
DavidS replied: "nothing, it is just psychological problem"
Hendrik K. replied: "Metformin, sold under the trade name Glucophage, is used to treat diabetes, but several recent papers show that it also helps non-diabetics to lose weight by reducing hunger
sugar goes from your intestines into your bloodstream, and then immediately into your liver. Then your liver releases sugar back into your bloodstream to cause your blood sugar level to rise. To keep blood sugar levels from rising too high, your pancreas release insulin into your bloodstream. Insulin makes you hungry all the time and causes your liver to convert extra calories to fat and it constricts arteries to cause heart attacks. You need insulin to keep blood sugar levels from rising too high to cause diabetes, nerve damage, heart attacks, strokes and kidney damage. Glucophage reduces sugar release from your liver to prevents blood sugar levels from rising too high, so your body doesn't need to produce as much insulin that makes you hungry and causes your liver to make fat"
Jenny H replied: "I have been through it all and know what's it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can't be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I've worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes.
Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight.
First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can't eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising...
This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it's good for the heart.
However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It's so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I've found a great addition to help any one out, it's a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don't get all crazy on me and say diet pills don't work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn't meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It's an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at theweightlossplace.com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it's the best pill I've tried and I've tried cupboards full. Now this doesn't mean you have to follow my foot steps but I've successfully lost roughly 70 pounds and keeping it off til this day.
Well good luck and remember what I said, Dedicate."

Does the Metformin really help with weight loss for those people who have PCOS? I started Metformin and was told it helps with weight loss. I was curious if that is true? I want to lose weight which im working on anyways before I start trying to conceive or taking meds to.
SZO replied: "It can cause loss of appetite so it can cause you to lose weight. It can also lower LDL cholesterol which can further lower your weight. But again, it can be safe that weight loss doesn't happen in all patients taking metformin because the effect really varies in certain individuals."

Eliza Minor replied: "The main use for metformin is in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2, especially when this accompanies obesity and insulin resistance. Metformin is the only anti-diabetic drug that has been proven to protect against the cardiovascular complications of diabetes.
It also does not cause weight gain but may produce only minor weight loss.
Metformin also modestly reduces LDL and triglyceride levels.
Metformin is contraindicated in people with any condition that could increase the risk of lactic acidosis, including kidney disorders, lung disease and liver disease. Heart failure has long been considered a contraindication for metformin use, although a 2007 systematic review showed metformin to be the only anti-diabetic drug not associated with harm in people with heart failure."
What should I eat to lose weight on metformin? I have PCOS and have started taking 1500 mg of Metformin XR, I have read that I should eat low on the GI food list, but that is so hard to keep track of what I can and cannot have......Any other suggestion?
Ki||erQueeN replied: "hi..i am taking metformin for about 3 weeks now and one of good signs after taking it is you can really control your appetite...i have lost 1.5 kgs and just watch your carbs..drink alot of water and consume more fruits and veges.."
Metformin for Insulin Resistance in achieving weight loss: How long does it take to work? I have been diagnosed with insulin resistance and have been prescribed 2500 mg metformin daily.
Many ppl with PCOS, metabolic syndrome, or insulin resistance lose weight bc their insulin isnt working properly without the aid of metformin or the like. I have been on it for over a week and have not lost any weight.
I was wondering if anyone has experienced weight loss after a couple weeks, rather than immediately.
drdebilitas replied: "Hello ,
one week is a very very short period for metformin to work , it needs two weeks to reach the maximum effect , and more than 1 month to cause any weight loss ,
The action of metformin is greater when the patient starts a healthy diet simultanously , don't forget that ,
2500 mg is a high dose to start with , and 1000 mg (in two doses ) would be better .
Dr.Debilitas"
www.hotloss.com replied: "Wow. I was prescribed that several years ago when I was about 16 years old. It seems that I was at 1000mg. I actually didn't experience much weight loss directly from taking it. Of course, I was already exercising 3-4 hours per day and watching my diet (now that I know better, I was actually eating too little considering my exercise). Interestingly, I am actually far heavier now than I ever was back then since I was really sick with autoimmune problems for almost two years. However, I don't have problems with my blood sugar anymore. I think I must have simply outgrown it.
Anyhow, although some people definitely experience weight loss with this and other pre ion drugs, I think it is important that you consider lifestyle choices that may affect your health. Depending on your situation, you may have developed insulin resistance due to being overweight, having poor nutrition, or being inactive. If these sorts of things resulted in your illness, you need to consider changing them.
After all, the number on the scale isn't directly related to good health. You need to consider exercise (strength, cardio, and flexibility) and nutrition (including carb/protein/fat, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals). It's a lot to think about, I know, but that is what will let you live a healthy life. I am learning more about it every day, and am trying to get myself healthy again after having a long period of illness. In fact, I've started a blog to keep me accountable at . Feel free to stop by!"
Has anyone lost weight while taking Metformin? I seem to be slowly losing weight and I am taking Metformin as well as Mona Vie. I am seeking others who may have lost weight by taking either or both.
mlrios2003 replied: "I never lost weight on it. I do know that if you are diabetic, and you don't keep your blood sugar fairly level it makes it even harder to loose weight."
tombip replied: "I have PCOS and have been taking metformin for 7 years now. And if I am careful with my carb intake I have and do lose weight! This last year I got more serious about it, and watching carbs (following a lowcarb diet) I have lost almost 40lbs"
Renato N replied: "if you're diabetic and you're in metformin, it will help you loose some weight, metformin enhances the elimination of some lipids (fat) in your body by increasing the utilization of your insuline, and that is why it lowers your weight (of course, it is like a side effect, not its principal)"
Hawkeye replied: "I personally have not experienced any weight loss taking Metformin. I did once I started Byetta, however! Just start going for walks! exercise will cause you to exercise and generally feel better about yourself!
:)

jalee2207 replied: "i did lose a lot of weight while taking metformin but it was not because of the metformin it was because my sugars were still constantly too high and i needed to switch to insulin, make sure you keep track of your sugars and if they are high it will cause you to lose weight"
Does clomid and metformin help you to loss weight while treating PCOS? Does clomid and metformin help you to loss weight while treating PCOS?
I have PCOS does the change in your insulin while on clomid or metformin help you to loose weight?
sokokl replied: "Metformin can help with weight loss as a result of the Insulin Resistance that can occur with PCOS for some women but I have not heard that Clomid can do that since that helps more with fertility.
However, I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say."
How much weight did you lose on Metformin? 1) How many lbs?
2) How long did it take you to lose that weight?
3) Did you conceive/get pregnant and after how long?
4) Was Metformin combined with Clomid?
Please share your story. Thanks!
Dolyn replied: "I didn't lose any weight, but then again, I'm not overweight to begin with. Also, I haven't tried to get pregnant, in fact I had my tubes tied. I just wanted my PCOS under control.
