If I take a low dose of Zoloft (25 mg) will I still gain weight? or only if I take high doses? I just started taking Zoloft and I've been reading that it causes weight gain which Im really concerned with. I was previously on lexapro and I gained about 20 lbs, even though my dr doesn't think so. anyone think that if I stick with a low dose I wont gain weight?

jandy replied: "depends on how much it stimulates your appetite and how much you eat. you can still exercise too, you only gain what you eat and don't burn off with daily activity. wellbutrin suppresses appetite, by only 5-7#, also causes hair loss, I wouldn't recommend it. it 's different than zoloft."

dip131 replied: "Zoloft can cause weight increase or weight loss in some individuals.Try on low caloie diet and do not attempt to decrease the dosage prescribed as it need the sufficient dosage to treat depression ,it may take some time to show its full effect, you can continue with the drug if the benefits out weigh the adverse effects,do not attempt to stop suddenly as it can cause some reactions in your body if you do so."

Rockford replied: "I never gained weight on zoloft. I did gain weight on lexapro. I don't think weight gain is as common on zoloft. The only one a person doesn't gain weight is on wellbutrin. Its the only one that gives you more energy. Here's a link to what people had to say about zoloft. Look for comments about weight gain and then compare it to lexapro and wellbutrin. (some hated it and rate it 1. Others loved it and rated it 5. take it with a grain of salt, but if everyone mentions weight gain or weight loss, it may give you a clue) zoloft is one of the stronger SSRI's get your doctor to read the second link on lexapro if he doesn't beleive it causes weight"

Will skipping zoloft doses make me feel sick? I have been on zoloft for just over a year now and I was unable to pick up my refill of it for a couple days. Now that i've been off of it, i'm starting to feel really sick. Is this normal? Will it go away when I start taking them again?

gratefully_bj replied: "yes"

can taking fairly large doses of zoloft for a long period of time ruin your mind? 6-7 years 100- 200mg im 19 and i have been on it since i was 13 my thinking and memory are real foggy and its hard to feel any emotion Mri was normal i have slight and sudden tics of my head and legs nothing major, but it worries me

la buena bruja replied: "Zoloft gave me a tic, so I switched to something else. Other than that, you should be OK."

rosieQ replied: "u must be in contact w/your dr. and have a dialog about your very important concerns. Or, have u not been following his recommendations???"

How long did zoloft take for you to work when increasing doses? I'm 15 years old and I started at 50mg and stayed on that for a month, felt nothing. my doctor moved me up to 75mg and i've also been on that for a month, still no positive results. about two days ago my doctor moved me up again to 100mg and im hoping i will finally see some results for my depression and anxiety. Did it take you a while to see results and did you have to increase doses untill you felt them?

Republican Girl replied: "I know Zoloft is extremely similar to Lexapro, which is what I take. I started Lexapro at 10mg and it didn't help. Upped it to 20 and it didn't help. Then upped it to 30 after 6 months and it helped within a week. The uppered dosages don't take as long to kick in as the initial dosage."

How do you know when you need to up your zoloft dose? I have been taking Zoloft for about a month and a half, and it has helped with some things- but I still get bouts of depression here and there just like before. It helps me some what when I'm feeling normal, but I still have downs. Should I up my dose? Sorry! I'm taking 100 mgs right now.

jackie replied: "You dont say how many mgs you are taking of it. You should ask your doctor. It seems to me that your dosage should be increased. I too am on sertraline (zoloft). Same thing happened to me and i went to my doctor and explained it to him and he upped my dosage from 25 mgs to 50 mgs and he said the majority of people take 50 mgs of zoloft. Hope this helped some."

barbiexboness replied: "It is best to talk to your doctor before you up your dose on Zoloft. Go and tell them still how you feel still, and they will tell you if they think you should up your dose."

Ilana K replied: "Obviously you should discuss it with your doctor. Usually a dose is raised when there isn't sufficient efficacy achieved (like in your case) and there are no side effects. Usually minimum effective dose is 75mg and patients can take up to 150-200mg but, of course, under med supervision."

garyomega replied: "It would help if you mentioned what your dose is now, have you asked you prescriber, and how often does this depression happen, and how severe is it? Sometimes a "mood stabilizer" like Lamictal needs to be added to the Zoloft. BTW, the max dose of Zoloft is 200mg per day. It is "normal" to feel some depression. Everyone does, and the medicated mentally ill are no exception to this "break through" depressive episodes."

Ryan A replied: "I don't think you should but I might be biased because I started on Zoloft then stopped because I disliked the side effects. But I do know that the more you take the more likely you are to have withdrawal issues when the time comes to stop taking it, and you are also more likely to have increased issues with regular side effects as well, i.e. sexual side effects, decreased sense of touch, disturbing dreams, etc. On just 25mg of Zoloft, I had to poke myself with sharp s to assure myself that I could still feel things and had very disturbing dreams almost every night. Very scary."

Help with Zoloft doses? I've been on 75mg of zoloft and my doc wants me to increase to 150mg, I did for two days, and i felt kinda sick, really irritable, anxious, so today i took only the 75mg and my doc isn't back till Monday (of course) was wondering if i should take the other 75mg this evening, as the zoloft might be more tolerable in divided doses.... any advice?

J B replied: "I would again try to take the 150 mg all at once. Take it with some food. You need to give it a decent try because a lot of medications give symptoms when they are first started or the dose is increased. Then, on Monday, if the symptoms are not gone - give your doctor a call and ask him about splitting the dose. Twice a day dosing is just harder for most people to remember than once a day dosing but this might be your only option."

Emmah replied: "I have been taking Zoloft for a while now (only a 50 mg dose) but I noticed an uncomfortable feeling, like shaking from the inside at first. I just cut the pills in half taking half the dose in the morning and half in the evening. I usually take mine in the am (all at once now) since it seems to keep me up at night. I would suggest increasing a bit slower than your doc suggested. Instead of just doubling your dose, try adding 25 mg for a week, another 25 for another week then the final 25 the week after. Check with the doc on Monday to see if this would be ok to do since you aren't feeling the best after taking the full amount. I actually asked my doc if I could double the dose on days when I'm having a hard time getting a handle on my emotions, facetiously of course. This drug doesn't build in your system like others, so it's ok if you miss a dose here and there. It won't make or break the effects."

margie k replied: "That's a really heavy dosage, what are the reasons your doc gave you for so much ?? and you should ask about other therapies to help out instead of giving you so much of this drug. If you got no input from him you need to really ask what is going on and also if it made you feel like that it is too much all at once. If you are taking 75 mg. now how do you feel ? does it work at all for you ? you may have to switch meds if that dosage isn't working for you. You need to discuss this with your doc and meanwhile I would NOT take that much at one time again. Too much of this drug will make you irritable and anxious instead of doing its job so just let your doc know what it did to you. Everyone is different so he can't know until you give him feedback how you felt."

Question about zoloft and missing doses? Hi everyone, I have been on zoloft for anxiety for the last 6 months and occasionally for whatever reason sometimes skip it generally because I am busy or forget, not on purpose. This is usually 2 or 3 days and by then I start getting the withdrawl side effects (depression and crying etc). Now over the past week without realising I have missed it everyday except maybe once (again from being busy). The problem I am having is that yesterday I have crashed my car (not badly) but today I have been able to control crying for about 10 minutes and then I start again, I think its a combination of shock sinking in and withdrawl effects that have heightened as a result of this incident. Now I have been on 100mg for quite some time but I really need to calm myself down until this dosage starts working in my system again which will likely be tomorrow. Is there anything I can do to stop these horrible side effects in the meantime? Would it be bad if I initially took 150mg today and then back to regular tomorrow? I have tried going for a run and having a sleep but they both make me feel like crying more. Does anyone have experiences with missing doses of zoloft and curbing the side effects, I will be going over to a friends to watch movies later so that might take my mind off it but just in general circumstances? thanks.

Krista replied: "Oh hun been there done that, you should never take more then prescribed if you miss a dose you should take it as soon as possible, write ur self a note to remind you or as soon as you get up take it, but the side affects are different with everyone you should contact your doctor with your concerns I did an she gave me something for Anxiety an told me to take some vitamins also so I did called Stress B-Complex, an Super B-Complex, those help alot they are all Natural..."

Is it ok to miss one dose of Zoloft? I have been taking Zoloft for three months now and I really think it has helped. I feel great. However, I went to pick up my pre ion tonight and the pharmacy screwed something up and now I wont be able to get it until tomorrow, so I will have to miss the dose I would have taken today? Is this bad? What are the side effects? Will I start feeling depressed again? Do I need to double up tomorrow when I get my refill?

green eyes replied: "one day wont really matter, the worst effect may be a slight headache"

Anika replied: "I'm on zoloft too. One day is no big deal at all, i didn't feel any different. I once went three days though without taking it and had really bad withdrawal symptoms so I do not suggest going any longer than 2 days without it. And you don't need to double up tomorrow just go back to your regular dose"

catgmz replied: "skipping or forgetting to take a dose will not do any harm and it will not cause you to become depressed again... take your medication as soon as you can get it from the pharmacy... and DO NOT double up!!!... just continue taking your medication as you normally would on a daily basis."

phreadriquebean replied: "Missing one dose may give you very mild withdraw symptoms like a headache and some nausea but it will not cause you to become depressed again. DO NOT double up when you get your pre ion, though. It could cause similar symptoms and would be too much medication for your body to handle properly at one time... then you would go through a withdraw again when you went back to your normal dose."

SMS replied: "you'll be fine. one dose is not a big deal though it is not advised. i take a ton of meds for my bipolar disorder; sometimes i forget a dose. this happens for a lot of people. just dont make a habit of it. you shouldnt have any symptoms from missing 1dose. it'll be ok. dont double up!"

Coming off a low dose of Zoloft after only 7 days? I've been taking 12.5mg of Zoloft for 7 days and I don't like the way it makes me feel. Doc only prescribed it for anxiety not depression but it almost makes anxiety worse! Plus it actually makes me feel depressed. If I stop just right now after such a short time and low dose will there be any side effects? Has anybody felt this?

sokokl replied: "I would recommend getting a hold of your doctor to let them know that you can't handle the side effects of the medication and would like to come off now. Ask them what needs to be done to be weaned off the medication (if that should become necessary)."

How would one feel if their Zoloft dose was too high? I went from 50 to 100 mg's 2 weeks ago once a day I will feel really panicky, and very agitated...

xinnocentxbutxdeadlyx replied: "I got the same side effect when i went from 25 mg to 50! Maybe you should gradually increase your dose instead of suddenly, so your body has time to adjust."

~Miss No Name~ replied: "Well when my dose wat to high i was really parinoid & couldnt sit still & freaked out about anything. If you feel the dose is to high you should cut back."

SUTHHERN REDD replied: "Since you are feeling this way then you might want to cut that dosage increase in half for a week or two and then raise it to the 100mg's. Now if this is a capsule then it will be impossible to do BUT if it's a pill then you can do that. **Get yourself a pill cutter -- they are real inexpensive at any drugstore or Walmart/K-Mart etc.... Just cut it in half and cut the half's in half again and take 3 pieces.. which will = 75mg..Do that for a week or two and then increase it to the full 100mg's....Then your body should feel the difference for the better and you wouldn't necessarily be having the panicky or agitated feelings.... I am not a doctor but I have had to do this with medications in the past to build up to a certain dosage... -- good luck --"
