Switching from Paxil to Cymbalta too quickly? Can anyone advise? I've been on Paxil for 15 years..at least. Was raised from 20 mg to 30 mg last year. It's just not working at all. My Dr want me to try Cymbalta. I believe she said she prescribed 60 mg. She will up it to 80 mg if it doesn' t work out. What my question is: She told me to wean off Paxil by taking 15 mg a day for "a few days", then take the Cymbalta. This is ALL she told me. Does anyone have any experience with doing it this way or any helpful knowledge? I just want to make sure I don't go crazy or something. I have three children and I'm a stay at home Mom. I don't want to lose my insanity here! :) Thanks in advance for any help. THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP! It is pretty scary for me!

zerotowall replied: "My MD changed me from paxil to cymbalta and had no problem switching, I was a little nervous for a couple of days but got Ok. that is the way you have to do it. Gradually go off one and then on the other, you will be fine doing it, I was."

I have taken prozac (pretty much the same thing) for several years, and recently switched to Cymbalta because I have developed severe arthritis and Cymbalta is supposed to help some with pain too. All I did was just take the Cymbalta in place of the prozac and I was just fine. That was a few months ago, I'm still OK. If the Paxil isn't helping at all anyway, what do you have to lose? My Doc also told me that if I ever felt especially troubled or depressed one day during the transition, I could take both pills that day. I've also tried that a couple of times, worked fine. Hope this helps! And hang in there! I understand how you feel, but it will get better once you find the right meds for you!! God BLess!!"

Rocky Raccoon replied: "If you are taking the Cymbalta while you are weaning you should be OK. I weaned off Lexapro while starting Cymbalta and had no symptoms. I just took it for a few days while I started the Cymbalta too. But I did not like the Cymbalta. I was sleepy all the time. I took it for about 9 months. When I weaned off of it, I had terrible side effects. If you find yourself having side effects from weaning off the Paxil, call your doctor and ask for more specific instruction. SSRI's are notorious for withdrawal symptoms."

Why was I put on tegratol w/ paxil? I don't have seizures & was taken off cymbalta.? I have been on cymbalta 60mg. for two years & can't sleep on the stuff so ended up in group therapy in order to get my meds paid for. Dr. says I am low bipolar - depression & put me on paxil & tegratol & staying on klonipin. I don't have seizures. Why tegratol 100mg 3x's a day. I am not manic or destructive. Just stressed & having crying spells. I am afraid of the side effects.

hikarihime9029 replied: "They sometimes give anti seizure meds to people who are bipolar. It is actually very common. If you are afraid of the side effects, just talk to your doctor."

Pick A Winner replied: "You don't even have to be bipolar for them to try anticonvulsants. I am not bipolar. I have never been manic and I take lithium and lamictal, both of which are bipolar meds and lamictal is similar to the tegretol you take. Basically the doctors will try what ever has been shown to stabilize your mood. It does not matter what your official diagnosis is."

anyone started weaning off paxil and wanting to try something different to help with anxiety and depression? Paxil as a known fact causes the dreaded weight gain but helps anxiety-does anything else after weaning off paxil help like cymbalta with anxiety and depression like paxil without weight gain?

Katie B replied: "effexor is what I am on and it did wonders... and i didnt gain or loose weight from it... some people i know took welbutrin and lost weight, when i took it I took the original "purple pill" welbutrin and lost 15 lbs. i lost my appetite but it came back like 3 months later..."

brazilian76 replied: "Hi...as you may know you are taking an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor). You may want to ask a doctor to prescribe you a different medicine in this category like Prozac. Cymbalta is also not a bad option but it works a little differently affecting a different neurotransmitter caller Norepinephrine. Good luck :)"

HK3738 replied: "Besides Effexor, one can consider lexapro, prozac and wellbutrin. Latter has least weight gain but maybe more effective for depression than anxiety, ask you doctor, good luck"

maros612 replied: "paxil is a life-saver for me. I don't particulary like some of its side effects, was tired of them after 3-year use, but no other meds seemed to work for me. I was on lexapro, some other non ssri meds... nothing helped. About AD meds, their effect vary individually. If you can afford risiking it, let your doctor try more on you. I've never been in situation where i could put my ability to function normally in risk, that's why i stayed with paxil."

Should I expect withdrawl from Paxil to Cymbalta? My Dr. just took me off Paxil 40mg 1x/day and switched me to Cymbalta 60mg 1x/day. I'm worried about the withdrawl from the Paxil. I was also switched from Xanax 1mg 1/day to Klonopin .5mg 3x/day. I have been having increased panic attacks-anxiety lately, therefore the switch. I was on Paxil close to 6 years and it worked fine, until now which is why i went to my dr. for help...i'm not sure what to expect from my body or mind since this was just yesterday...

SaS replied: "Okay. I took paxil also, 40mg. I was also switched to cymbalta. The cymbalta increased my anxiety really really bad. So bad id wake up in the middle of night with awful panic. It was terrible!! I stopped taking it after two days and went to my dr what happend. She said people with bipolar and anxiety disorders sometimes cant take cymbalata. Tell your dr its making it worse.... After that she prescribed me clonazpam and xanax twice a day. After taking it for a few weeks it helped me way better than the paxil. But i still had anxiety...so the dr put me on Serequel also. It helps ALOT. You should talk to your dr about that....it made me feel soo much better..."

gracie replied: "Is this under your drs. care? I went off paxil after I didn't need it anymore. I was on 40 mgs and I would cut down by 1/2 mg per day and stay at that dosage for a couple weeks then cut by another 1/2 mg. for a couple weeks and kept doing that until I was off. I weened off slower than what my dr. said I had to do but I had no problems getting off of it that way."

knicname replied: "Speak with your MD about when you can start the Cymbalta...that will help you avoid headaches & irritability. You ought to wean yourself very slowly or once you are on the Cymbalta. Many times you don't have to be off the meds before you start a new one."

How long does it take to get off Cymbalta 60mg? Oh my gosh!? Was on 60mg for 2 yrs. dr. changed me to Paxil 20 mg, but 10 mg for the 1st week and full strengh of tegretal 300 mg, 3xs a day for bipolar, low end of it, depression & stress. I stopped cymbalta last saturday & started the paxil & tegretal this past monday. I am getting sick, feverish on & off & like electrical shocks through my body then I gotta sit or lay down when this happens. I could barley go into the drug store for some items or the grocery store to get dinner. I feel weird and I don't like these feelings. Will it get better or worse? gotta work this weekend so I need to get better. Also on Klonipin 0.5mg 2x's a day. God help me, please pray for me and I pray for everyone going through what I am going through. Peace.

turkish_tea61 replied: "Wow, your Dr. should be called. You might need to back on the Cymbalta for a while and SLOWLY wean off of it. Unless you want to stick it out a week or two. Maybe he might increase the Tegretol an and Paxil.Or tell you to take more Klonopin. Klonopin is highly addictive, don't increase it by yourself."

alexis replied: "I had to go off Cymbalta myself. The doctor rec commended a VERY slow taper. They also gave me medication to help with the withdrawal. I won't repeat "Turkish"'s answer, but I agree with it 100%. Please call your doctor before you do anything. I am certainly not a doctor, but answered this because my doctor told me that those things would happen to me if I withdrew quickly. Good luck!!"

I was just prescribed Cymbalta yesterday and can already tell an immediate difference in my anxiety level.? It is much lower, and I have been off of Paxil now for 9 months. Has anyone else had such great and immediate success on Cymbalta?

Jeff K replied: "Chances are it's a mental thing. It takes a few days to get into your system. I've tried practically every kind of Anti-depressant/ Anxiety medication and the only one that I find works that fast is Lorazepam. Mostly cause that's what it's used for."
