Amoxicillin For Infants in Questions
why do we give amoxicillin instead of cotrimoxazole in infants below 1 month old with jau? what is the effect of amoxicillin in infant below 1 month old and what is the effect of cotrimoxazole?

Nurse JC replied: "What is Jau?"

amoxicillin and tylenol combined for infants? My 6 month old son is on amoxicillin for an ear infection but still has a temperture. I gave hime Tylenol (infant's kind) and he crashed. Fell asleep in less than 5 minutes. He doesn't do that normally. Can you not combine the two?

E M replied: "Yes it's fine to give him tylenol with the antibiotic. He probably crashed because his body is fighting off an infection. It takes longer than 5 minutes for the tylenol to kick in. I doubt the tylenol made him fall asleep that fast."

ChantelleWilliams replied: "Yeah you can give the two, its probably just because it kicked in and he was finally feeling enough relief to actually get some sleep. I have found that the childrens motrin is the best for fevers and the kids generally like the taste better."

Amoxicillin And Infants. Please reply ASAP? My baby has an ear infection, and has been taking Amoxicillin for three days now, and has been vomiting all his food, and has had one bout of diarreah today. Now he has developed a red rash inside his belly button, could these symptoms be an adverse reaction to the amoxicillin, and if so should I stop it?

Wild Thing replied: "Yes, call the Doctor. There are other antibiotics available."

Jordie replied: "yes! Contact his doctor asap!"

beachcutie03 replied: "Could be, I would contact his Ped. pronto and tell him/her his symptoms."

Fuzzy replied: "You should go to the doctor asap! the dose of antibiotic could be to strong making it toxic for the child."

Wendy K replied: "These could be signs that your baby is allergic to the amoxicillin, or they could be signs that your baby's condition is simply getting worse. Either way, call your doctor immediately to find out the best course of action."

voodootabby replied: "Yes. Stop the medication and call a doctor. A lot of children are allergic to Amoxicillin."

Pisces Baby replied: "I would either take the child to the ER or watch closely tonight, & go to the dr. in the morning."

Kat replied: "Call the doctor asap. Sounds like it may be an allergic reaction?"

getagrip replied: "for his safety and your worry I would say he is having a reaction to the medication.Stop the medication..And call the doctor tomorrow...Many people can not take Amoxicilliam's or penacillions due to reactions..Until he can be seen give the baby some tylenol for babbies due to pain...I hope the little one get's feeling well soon..~~Sarah~~"

seatonrsp replied: "Sounds like a reaction. Stop the amoxicillin and call your Doctor ASAP. There are other medications they can give your baby."

ksta72 replied: "Penicillin allergies are fairly common, and Amoxicillin is in the same family. It is a very serious allergy, so I'd stop it immediately and call your pediatrician. Maybe even call the Poison Control center to see if they have suggestions if you can't get in contact with your ped right now. If the symptoms continue to get worse, I'd be at the ER quick. Good luck.."

maluchic86 replied: "These could be side effects to amoxicillin or even an allergic reaction to the meds, so you should definitely stop and call your pediatrician. If you need an answer right away, try to contact a 24-hour pharmacy and talk to a pharmacist. They know a LOT about these kinds of things. For example, for CVS, you can search for "24-hour stores with pharmacies" at. Just put in your zip code to find 24-hour pharmacies near you. WebMD is also a great resource on drugs and their side effects. According to, "Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify the doctor or pharmacist promptly...A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. Amoxicillin can commonly cause a mild rash that is usually not serious. However, you may not be able to tell it apart from a rare rash that could be a sign of a severe allergic reaction. Therefore, seek immediate medical attention if you develop any rash." Particularly since the patient is a baby, you want to be careful, and stopping the meds is a good idea until you know what's going on. Hope that helps!"

mominohio replied: "Yes it can be an allergic reaction....call the Dr's office now"

CeCe replied: "YES! that is a reaction to the medz! its very common alot of babies can not have amoxicillin! and have allergic reaction! my oldest son did! he is three now and still can't take it! i would stop the meds right now! and take him to the Doctor asap tomorrow tell them whats going on! they will def. tell you to stop the meds and they will give him something else to try! hope this helps! good luck w/ your baby! Hope he feels better Soon!"

Anonymous replied: "Make an appointment with your pediatrician about baby possibly being allergic to penicillin. (They might dismiss you because it is uncommon. Be sure to note if someone in your family is allergic.) If it is an allergy to penicillin, the rash will continue to spread across the entire body. Give Tylenol for comfort. Amoxicillin does not always clear ear infections in babies. That is why it is very important to go back for all the follow up appointments. If they stop Amoxicillin, they will more than likely put you on Zithromax. (It is the most commonly prescribed antibiotic for young children with a penicillin allergy) The Zithromax stays in their system for 10 days after being taken, so if that doesn't work they should wait to prescribe another in case of overdosing. If Zithromax and Omnicef (likely next choice if Zithromax doesn't clear) do not work, you need to be sent to an ENT (Ears Nose and Throat doctor) The diarrhea once a day is normal on antibiotics, but should be cause enough for concern that the pediatrician will stop the Amoxicillin even without presence of the rash. Keep in mind that rash, infections, vomiting, and diarrhea are also symptoms of things other than ear infection. If baby is behaving abnormally you should go immediately to the nearest emergency room. So long as baby remains generally happy or is maintaining normal activities, most pediatricians will not be overly concerned. It is important to see your pediatrician immediately to get a backup antibiotic and stopping any medication without the instruction or notification of a doctor is not a good idea. (At least tell them!) Also, antibiotics are a new introduction to baby's tummy, so do not introduce any new foods while giving antibiotics... will help you rule out a possible food allergy as oppose to medicinal allergy."

allergic reaction to amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium in infants>??? my daughter was prescribed it and i think she is allergic to it she's 14months old..what are some symtoms of possible side effects of an allergic reations?

natalie replied: "Possible reaction could include redness, hives, itching, swollen eyes, and fever. The hives and itching were around the folds of skin. In a 14 month old, excessive crying and irritation is imaginable. I also had an allergic reaction of this type to an antibiotic in the same pre ion family, and I took some liquid benadryl. It helped almost immediatley. I went to the doc the next day."

Lynn replied: "here are some websites good luck"

Can I give my 7 month old son infant tylenol with amoxicillin? He got his "last" dose of shots today and was found to have an ear infection as well. So he is currently teething, and has a fever on top of the ear infection and shots. Poor baby! Can I give him infant tylenol to help ease the teething and fever on top of the prescribed amoxicillin?

????? replied: "bitch u crazy?"

erickal_church replied: "yes but make sure you check the correct doage for his weight."

lady26 replied: "you need to call your pediatrician."

ghost_writer replied: "Yes u can, i would recommend you use advil instead of tylenol. It works better, but if all u have is tylenol then you can use that."

IKray-z replied: "your fu*in insane...your not suposed to give kids stuff like that!"

Mommy to David replied: "He got shots with an infection??? Thats a BIG no-no! Find a new doctor, the one you have put your son in some serious risk. You should NEVER get any vaccinations while you are sick or have an infection... It's going to really overload his immune system. Basically, they put substances (aluminum is one, i know) in vaccines to weaken the immune system so that the body will react to the virus in the vaccine. You poor baby got a double blow! Don't give him tylenol... I know its hard, but it will be better for his system to work it out on its own. Tylenol is just one more thing the body has to fight against and filter out. Give him probiotics to help with the anti-biotics and lots of love. My little guy was super-sick this weekend, so I can empathize with you. It's so hard to see them that way."

MauiMomma replied: "Yes, I'm a mommy of two little ones not a Doctor though so you might want to ask you're Doctor. But I've done the same in the past with my little ones and it helped them get the rest they need to get better."

Kandie replied: "Yes. Tylenol is for pain and fever, amoxicilin is for infection. Just make sure you give the correct dosage for the childs size."

Does anyone know of any remedies for an infant with an ear infection other than amoxicillin? Thanks Julie! I should have been more specific, I wasn't looking for any "home remedies," just an alternative to the antibiotic.

Lisa V replied: "go back to the dr and get anothe rantibiotic per ion. there are hundreds, just some are more suited for certain things. home remedies CANT clear up infections. its in the blood."

julie replied: "it is not true that infections cannot be cured by herbs like hte other person said. I have seen herbs cure an raging infection in my mom's legs and blood that no doctor's herbs help[ed..by the next morning the infection was goods and she was better. One does need to use caution and common sense, especially with an infant. Some of the things I recommended to this person might be of help but be sure to use an infant size dose. This is very important. I would not use the garlic in the ear personally but maybe the herbpharm mullein garlic compound or one of the things at the links (do not use the herbal snuff that was for sinus and I would not use it personally on a child) To figure a child or infant dose, use Clark's rule where you figure the dosing by weight as explained here. if sweetening the mixture like he says do NOT use honey for an infant under age one or two but the real maple syrup (not the fake stuff) I am sure people will give me a thumbs down but I am answering the person's question as asked. Herbs are effective if you know what you are doing and safer than drugs IMO"

Will antibiotics make my infants urine smell bad? He was recently prescribed amoxicillin and his urine smells like a #2 diaper, is this normal?

Turn the page and watch me grow replied: "Yep it is normal also watch him for a yeast infection. My son always gets one when he is on antibiotics >.<"

Shelby's Momma replied: "Yes, and possibly change color. Be prepared for his #2's to become runny too...very runny. Ask the doctor if he is old enough for yogurt and give that to him to try to help prevent a yeast infection. Good luck!"

can antibiotics cause gas in infants? Is it possible that antibiotics can be causing excess gas in my five month old? He has a sinus infection, and is on amoxicillin, codal for cough and congestion, and tylenol and orajel randomly for teething pain. What is most likely giving him gas?

sheeboobles replied: "I think they do. I have been on amoxicillin for a sinus infection and breast feed and have noticed my 4.5 mo is really gassy."

desmolition replied: "Yes. Happened to both my kids. There are drops you can give the baby to help them release the gas. Sometimes it is too far into their colon to be burped out. Talk to your pharmacist to ensure which drops would be appropriate for your child."

nowinteknicolor replied: "they do actually, in a roundabout sort of way. It's not the antibiotic directly causing gas. But antibiotics kill bacteria, good for the sinus infection, but it also kills the GOOD bacteria (natural flora) in your stomach that aids in digestion. So stomach/digestion problems are common with antibiotics, and should resolve as the natural flora rebuilds over the next month."

9 month old baby on amoxicillin? My baby has tonsillitis. Dr. prescribed Ospamox (amoxicillin). She didn't get a rash, but she is suffering from a lot of gas and tummy pains, especially at night. She wakes up every half hour. I am exhausted. Does this medication cause upset stomachs and gas in some infants? I need anyone's experience...

Elo replied: "It can cause tummy problems if the pre ion is strong. It should get better after shes done with it but until then you can rub her tummy, lie her on her back and gently push her legs toward her to relieve gas."

Aiden Grant due 8-3-08 replied: "I was on amixicillin at 9 months also and my mom said i got bad stomach aches and diarrhea also but turns out I'm allergic to it. it could be a small reaction to it."

mystic_eye_cda replied: "Try giving probiotics (you can just open the pills and put the powder straight into her mouth its sweet and most kids like it) or probiotic containing food (live culture yogurt, kefir, etc). Also make sure that you are following the directions as to whether to take it with or without food. From what I see you can do either but with a small meal can help prevent stomach upset. What side effects can this medication cause? Return to top Amoxicillin may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: * upset stomach * vomiting * diarrhea Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, call your doctor immediately: * severe skin rash * hives * seizures * yellowing of the skin or eyes * unusual bleeding or bruising * pale skin * excessive tiredness * lack of energy"
